Today we are celebrating Oli, who has officially been at Fairfield House Vets for 1 year! 🎉

Oli is a key part of our team, especially with her interest in cattle and her focus on supporting farmers in keeping their livestock and wider farm environments healthy. Her calm approach, practical skills, and genuine care for animals make a real difference every day.

We’re glad to have her with us, thank you for all your hard work over the past year Oli, here's to many more!

Meet Isabella 🐾🐈

She was admitted to the surgery for 10 days in May due to suffering from an acute kidney injury.

She recently visited us for her six-month check-up and blood test, and we’re very pleased to report that she’s bright, stable, and doing well.

A quick note on kidney health:
Chronic kidney disease is more common in older animals, but acute kidney injury can occur at any age. Symptoms can vary and may include lethargy, drinking more, weight loss, reduced appetite, and vomiting.

If you have any concerns about your pet’s kidney health, we recommend arranging an examination, along with blood and urine testing, so we can investigate early and provide the right support.

✨ Meet the Team — Lana ✨

Say hello to Lana, one of our brilliant Veterinary Nurses! She joined us just 4 months ago and has already become such a valued part of the team.

Lana’s favourite animal is the red panda (we get it — they’re adorable). The best part of her job? Seeing a patient she’s cared for head home happy, bright, and on the mend. It’s those moments that remind her why she does what she does.

Outside the practice, Lana loves getting out in the fresh air with her black Labrador, Remi. Whether it’s long walks, hiking up new trails, or exploring nature with her camera in hand, she’s all about turning ordinary days into little adventures. She’s also a keen photographer and enjoys drawing in her downtime.

⚠️ Avian Influenza Update ⚠️

The UK Chief Veterinary Officer has ordered a mandatory housing order to cover the whole of England from 0001 on Thursday 6 November 2025, following the escalating number of confirmations of avian influenza in kept and wild birds.

It is a legal requirement to house your birds if you:
• Keep more than 50 birds, or
• Keep fewer than 50 birds but sell or give away eggs, meat, or poultry products.

Keeping birds indoors and separated from wild birds is critical to reduce the risk of infection.

A GB-wide Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) also remains in place, meaning strict biosecurity measures are mandatory for all bird keepers, regardless of flock size. Biosecurity measures include reporting of changes in egg production, mandatory record keeping, disinfecting footwear, and cleansing & disinfecting housing and concrete walkways on a continuous basis.

H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Update - Uckfield

On the 31st October H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza was confirmed on a premises near Uckfield. A 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone has been set up around the premises.

The practice falls within the 3km protection zone - therefore NO poultry or birds can visit the practice REGARDLESS of where they are. We will instead be doing telephone consults for birds - these will be chargeable if medicines are prescribed. For birds to attend the practice, owners have to apply for a special license from the APHA prior (this can take 5 days).

Birds within the 3km and 10km zone should not leave their premises and should be housed or, if housing is not possible, covered to prevent contact with wild birds.

Mammals kept on the same premises as poultry within the zones cannot visit the practice unless they are pets who do not have access to the poultry.

Bird keepers should adhere to strict biosecurity measures. If bird flu is suspected, the APHA should be contacted on 03000 200301.

We all love a good display in the sky… but our pets? Not so much.

Loud bangs, bright flashes, strange smells — fireworks can be terrifying for animals. Even the most confident dog or cat can become anxious, clingy, or want to hide.

How Fireworks Can Affect Pets:
• Shaking, panting, pacing
• Hiding or trying to escape
• Whining, barking, or meowing more than usual
• Destructive behaviour (chewing, scratching doors, etc.)
• Loss of appetite
• Accidents in the house
If your pet struggles with fireworks, you’re not alone — and we can help. The key is preparing early, not waiting until 5 minutes before the first bang.

✅ What You Can Do Now
• Create a Safe Den: A cosy hideaway with blankets, favourite toys, and something that smells like you.
• Play Noise Recordings: Gradually introduce fireworks sounds at very low volume and slowly build up.
• Keep Routine Normal: Pets pick up on our mood. Stay calm, act normal, and give reassurance when needed.
• Close Curtains & Play Background Noise: TV, radio, or calming music can help drown out sudden booms.

If you’re worried about fireworks season, give us a call on 01825 764268
We’ll help you plan ahead and make sure your pet feels safe, secure, and supported. 🐾💛
