☀️ Wow, it's a warm one today ☀️

It's already unbearable in the shop but we are hanging on until we've got dougies in. I envision that we will be closing between 2 and 3pm.

We are sorry for any inconvenience caused and thanks for your understanding 🐾❤️

Please please please leave your dogs at home today, I've seen far too many out walking in this. I promise your dog doesn't even want to walk today . (Obviously if they need to toilet out on a walk then stick to shaded and grassy areas).

🐾 More RAWGUST Myths 🐾

❌ MYTH: Dogs NEED carbohydrates in their diet.

“But dogs produce amylase, so they must need carbs!”

Nope. Being able to digest something doesn't mean an animal has an essential requirement for it.

Dogs are carnivorous by design. Their metabolism is well equipped to utilise protein and fat as primary fuel sources, and they can produce the glucose they need through gluconeogenesis, using amino acids and other non-carbohydrate sources.

Dietary carbohydrate isn't considered an essential nutrient for healthy adult dogs because their bodies can make glucose themselves.

And this is where I think we need to separate “can eat it” from “needs it.”

A varied diet based around meat, bone and offal, with the right balance and variety of ingredients, can provide the nutrients a dog physiologically requires without needing carbohydrates to make up a significant part of the diet.

Adding some fresh vegetables? Absolutely. They can provide fibre, phytonutrients and other useful compounds. But that doesn't mean we need to turn a carnivorous animal's diet into one dominated by carbohydrate.

And then there's another really important part of nutrition:

Feed the dog in front of you.

What works brilliantly for one dog won't necessarily work for another. Age, activity, digestion, health, individual tolerance and even preference all matter.

So understand the biology. Feed appropriately for the species. Provide variety.

And then look at the individual dog sitting in front of you.

Because nutrition isn't one-size-fits-all. 🐾

Can digest ≠ needs.
Can tolerate ≠ thrives on.

🐾 A little change to our opening hours 🐾

From Monday 24th August, we’re going back to being closed on Wednesdays.

Our new opening hours will be:

Monday: 10am to 5pm
Tuesday: 10am to 6pm
Wednesday: CLOSED
Thursday: 10am to 5pm
Friday: 10am to 6pm
Saturday: 10am to 3pm
Sunday: CLOSED

If you’ve been with us for a while, you’ll know that our opening hours have changed a few times over the years. As The Dog’s Deli has grown and changed, I’ve always tried to make sure our hours work for the business, our customers and the team.

We’ve had Wednesdays as our day off before and after looking at how we currently run the shop, I think it’s time to bring it back.

There’s a practical side to the decision, but there’s a personal one too. After nearly 10 years of running The Dog’s Deli, I think it’s important that I have a proper day away from it.

Not a day catching up on emails, sorting orders, doing the website or thinking about what needs doing next. Just a day where The Dog’s Deli can wait until Thursday.

I’m a big believer in being honest with you all and I think there’s something to be said for making changes when something needs tweaking rather than being afraid to change what we’ve always done.

We’ve extended our Monday and Tuesday hours to help balance the change and everything else stays pretty much as it is.

So, another little change to our hours but, we’re still here, still doing what we love and still very much looking forward to seeing you all. ❤️

Thank you as always for supporting The Dog’s Deli and for coming along with us through all the changes over the years. ❤️🐾

🐾 Pawfect Allergy Relief 🐾

Not all dogs with itchy skin, sore ears or upset tummies actually have allergies. Sometimes their immune system just needs a helping hand or there may be another underlying issue causing similar symptoms.

Pawfect Allergy Relief contains a phenomenal blend of ingredients designed to support your dog's gut health, immune system and natural inflammatory response from the inside out.

Alongside the right supplements, feeding a fresh diet can make a huge difference when trying to manage allergy or allergy like symptoms. Fresh feeding gives you complete control over the ingredients your dog eats, making food elimination trials much easier. It also removes many of the highly processed ingredients found in some commercial diets, which may help support overall health and reduce inflammatory burden.

If you're unsure which diet or supplement is right for your dog, pop into the shop for a chat. We'll always take the time to listen, discuss your dog's symptoms, and help you choose what we feel is the most appropriate option.

💚 Did you know that many conditions can mimic allergies? Food intolerances, gut imbalances, environmental sensitivities, chemical overload and other underlying health issues can all present with very similar symptoms. That's why looking at the whole dog, not just the symptoms, is so important.

✅ Fact: There is no scientific evidence that feeding a balanced raw diet makes dogs more aggressive. Aggression is a complex behaviour influenced by genetics, health, pain, fear, training and environment not whether their food is cooked or raw.
In fact, research has shown that addressing diet can improve behaviour in some dogs, particularly where underlying food sensitivities or gastrointestinal issues are affecting wellbeing. Other research has found fresh, raw meat based diets can improve metabolic health compared with kibble, which may support overall health and quality of life.

Here's some research showing how a therapeutic diet can help a dog suffering from diet related illness.
