✂️ Ever wondered what hand stripping actually is? 🐾

I’ve had a few hand-stripping appointments recently, so I thought it was the perfect opportunity to explain a little more about this grooming technique.

Unlike clipping, hand stripping removes the mature outer coat by hand or using a stripping tool. For the right type of coat, this can help maintain its natural texture and appearance. 🐶

It’s commonly used for wire-haired and rough-coated breeds, but hand stripping isn’t automatically right for every dog. The breed, coat condition and individual dog all need to be considered.

It’s one of those grooming techniques that you might not know much about until your dog needs it!

Two very relaxed customers this morning, clearly deciding that waiting for their humans is exhausting work! 😂

One of my favourite things about one-to-one grooming is seeing dogs become so comfortable in the salon that they can simply switch off and have a little nap.

🐾 Today is International Blind Dog Day 💙

Today is a chance to celebrate the incredible dogs who navigate the world a little differently.

Dogs who are blind or visually impaired can still enjoy a happy, fulfilling life — they simply rely more heavily on their other senses, routines and the people around them.

For grooming, patience and consistency can be particularly important. Taking time to let a dog understand where they are, using your voice to reassure them and avoiding unnecessary surprises can all help them feel more comfortable.

Every dog is an individual, and sometimes the best thing we can give them is simply time and understanding. 🐶💙

🐾 A little bit about the person behind The Bark Lounge… 💙

When I’m not grooming your four-legged friends, life is pretty busy!

🥁 I’m a musician, playing with multiple bands.

📚 I’m also a teacher, working with students who haven’t always found education easy or enjoyable.

👨‍👩‍👦 And most importantly, I’m a husband and dad to a very energetic 3-year-old!

Somehow, amongst all of that, I also get to spend my days doing something I absolutely love — working one-to-one with dogs. 🐶💙

It’s a slightly unusual combination of jobs and hobbies, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

A dog's ideal grooming routine depends on their breed, coat type, lifestyle and individual needs.

The most important thing is finding a routine that works for your individual dog. 🐾

🐾 Sometimes the groom starts before we even pick up the clippers… 💙

This little guy was visiting The Bark Lounge for the first time, and understandably, he needed a little time to figure me out.

So we sat on the floor, had a chat and took things at his pace. 🐶

There was absolutely no rush to get him onto the table. Building trust first meant that when we eventually did start grooming, he was much more comfortable and relaxed.

Every dog is different, and sometimes the best thing we can do is simply slow down and let them come to us.

Trust can’t be rushed. 💙

🐾 A little Cocker Spaniel history while we groom! ✂️💙

There’s much more to those gorgeous ears and flowing coat than meets the eye!

The Cocker Spaniel has a fascinating history as a working gundog. The name “Cocker” comes from the breed’s particular skill at hunting woodcock, with their smaller size making them well suited to working through dense woodland and cover. 🌳🐦

Spaniels have been helping people hunt for centuries, but the Cocker as we know it today really began to take shape in Britain during the 19th century. By 1873, the breed was being registered by The Kennel Club in England.

And although today’s Cockers might be more likely to chase a ball than a woodcock, that energetic, curious and enthusiastic personality is still very much part of the breed! 🐶

This little visitor was in for a well-deserved pamper, and I think you’ll agree she scrub up beautifully. 💙

Today we welcomed a real mixture of sizes and breeds at The Bark Lounge — from a Maltese Poodle and Toy Poodle, to a massive Rottweiler and even a rather rare Glen of Imaal Terrier! 🐶

We love the variety that comes through our doors, and our one-to-one grooming service is tailored to each individual dog, whatever their breed, size or personality.

Big, small or somewhere in between — they’re all welcome at The Bark Lounge. 🐾💙
