Hey guys, just a quick reminder that your dog won't suffer if they don't get their usual afternoon walks over the next few days. It's hot. And all the dogs are hot. Just like all of us are hot. I've been asked a few times this week about ways to keep your dog cool. So here is one or two easy ways
Shade. If you're outside and there is shade, then make sure your dog is in it. Some dogs are just daft and lie in the sunshine. If they do, then it's maybe wider they stay in the house.
Cool matts. Cool, gel type jackets. All od these devices can work. You just have to get your dog to lie on them. Or be happy enough to wear a gel/ cool jacket.
Damp towels. Pretty simple. Usually good for the big dogs. Throw a could of damp towels over them to bring their body temp down. But remember, it's hot, everybody is hot, so don't stress too much about it.
IMPORTANT. ICE.
DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG ICE CUBES
This may seem a good idea, but it can work in reverse. There is a very precise scientific reason for this, which I won't go into, but basically if a dog licks or chews on ice, then the dogs bodies natural reaction is to fight this extreme cold by heating up their body against it. As I said, there is a very sound scientific reason behind this. Feel free to Google it.
Water. Obviously always make sure that your dog has access to water. Just normal temp tap water is fine, and even tepid water. So long as they stay hydrated
Finally. Easiest thing is to just not take your dog out for any prolonged period of time in this weather . Very early morning, very late evening perhaps the beat option. But remember , don't freak out if your dog is panting a bit more than usual. It's natural . We are all warm.
