We have posted a helpful blog on our website about dispensing medication and prescriptions. It breaks down the legal requirements for new prescriptions, and ongoing dispensing of medication. We urge you to have a read through, especially if your horse is currently on medication. Please click the link below to go to the blog. If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to contact the practice.

Serum amyloid A (SAA) is an acute-phase protein that is produced predominantly by the liver in response to inflammation due to infection. It usually increases within a few hours of the onset of inflammation and can be detected in peripheral blood within 6-12 hours (depending on the severity of infection).

Our SAA readers can allow our vets to measure this biomarker on-site, meaning it can be identified and quantified at the time of your visit, and helps them make spot-on decisions regarding treatment. Serial SAA measurements can also be taken and compared overtime to monitor disease progression and response to treatment.

With some hotter days on the horizon, it looks like these two cool dudes are going to be chillin’ out in the sunshine.😎🧊For top tips on how to keep your horses, ponies and donkeys cool too, please read below:
☀️Ensure there’s a constant fresh water supply
☀️Ensure there’s an ample amount of shade
☀️Keep them indoors during the hottest parts of the day, and turn out in evening or early morning
☀️Ride during cooler hours
☀️Consider use of fans to help improve airflow
☀️Sun protection - horses with pink skin are prone to sunburn

If your horse is showing signs if heat exhaustion (rapid breathing, excessive sweating, lethargy and excessive heart rate) please make sure you move them to the shade, offer water and cool them down gradually

If your horse or pony is kept at a livery yard with frequent movement of horses, the smart choice is to vaccinate against EHV. While vaccination won’t prevent individual horses from developing neurological disease, it can reduce the risk of virus spread, and therefore reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.
