Happy Monday! (Ft - Olive the wire-haired pointer!)

Olive’s owners contacted me regarding issues that she had out walking. She had become very noise shy and fearful of the outdoors and was unable to enjoy herself on her walks - she would completely shutdown and refuse to move in any direction at all!
This was a very stressful and upsetting situation to see and her owners wanted her to be able to have fun again and feel confident outside like she use too!
This situation had been getting steadily worse over a period of months! However, after 2 session’s focusing on how to break her out of her shutdown and helping her owners to build her confidence back whilst walking, she was back out happily running around cow fields and play parks with alll the confidence in the world!

Both Olive and her owners put in a lot of hard work and were an absolute pleasure to work with. It’s so lovely to see them all out enjoying walks together once more! 🐶

Lots of people I meet feel bad about things their dogs do: jumping, vocalising, sleeping on their bed, or getting lots of treats and I think it’s so important to share what we at Canine-Mind think about this!

You should never feel bad for enjoying your dog and letting them enjoy themselves. You should never feel bad for having different training standards to other people! Not all dogs have to be able to do the same things or be trained to a competition level if you don’t want them to be - as long as they’re safe and healthy and no danger to others - that’s all that matters!

!It’s important to enjoy your dogs and let them enjoy themselves!

What’s the most important command to teach your puppy?

Arguably THE most important thing to teach your puppy is recall!
This simple command, whether it’s a whistle and sound or their name, could save their life one day!
Please teach your puppies recall as soon as you bring them home.
Teaching recall starts in the house and there are many great ways to create an great foundation recall before you go out for your first big walks outside!

🎇🎆🐶💥 NEW YEARS EVE is fast approaching and with it comes plenty of FIREWORKS!!! 💥🐶🎆🎇

No matter what, fireworks are inevitable and the best thing you can do is help prepare your pups for them. 🐶
Below are a few ways you can help manage your dogs anxiety and prepare them for fireworks! 🎆

* 🎶 Before the night, take a little time to play the sound of fireworks on a low level so your dog can here the sounds in a less intimidating way - make sure not to give affection to your dog whilst it is in a nervous or anxious state as the dog can interpret this as a reward for being in that state of mind - increasing the severity of the reaction.

* 🦮 Take your dog for a long walk before dark on the day, this reduces the risk of them hearing any early fireworks whilst they’re out and makes them tired (A tired dog is a happy dog! pent-up energy can increase their levels of anxiety)

* 🏡 Once inside from your walk - keep your dog safe and secured inside the home, give them somewhere cosy such as a space under a desk, corner or crate that they can feel safe in if they wish. (Never force a dog into a space or crate you think they will feel safer in or close the crate door - this can increase their levels of anxiety).

* 🎵 Use Ambient sounds at a fairly high volume in order to drown out some of the outside noise - A tv or radio playing music can work well.

*🏡🐶 If you can, stay home with your pet on the night - sometimes just the presence of someone else can calm them down and help them cope.

*🐶🦴 Keep them busy with treat/puzzle toys to help distract them during the display!

IMPORTANT - If your dogs runs to you for comfort, let them lean into you or hide behind you but fight the urge to give them affection at this point in time. Giving affection when stressed can increase their anxiety levels and inhibit a more severe future reaction.
