As the warmer months approach, we want to remind all rabbit owners about an important health concern: Flystrike. This condition is a serious threat to rabbits and can develop quickly, so it's essential to stay vigilant.
Signs of Flystrike to Watch For:
• Unusual behaviour: A rabbit in pain may become lethargic, stop eating, or show signs of discomfort.
• Foul-smelling discharge: Maggots can cause a strong, unpleasant smell, especially around the hindquarters.
• Visible maggots or skin damage: Check your rabbit regularly for signs of maggots or open wounds.
• Soiled fur or wetness: Keep an eye out for wet fur or mess around the back end, as this is often where flies will lay their eggs.
Prevention Tips:
1. Regular cleaning: Ensure your rabbit's living area is clean, dry, and free from waste. A clean environment reduces the chances of flystrike.
2. Proper grooming: Long-haired rabbits or those that struggle to groom themselves may need regular brushing to keep their fur free of debris and matting.
3. Monitor diet: A healthy diet with plenty of fibre can prevent digestive issues like diarrhoea, which can increase the risk of flystrike.
4. Health checks: Regularly inspect your rabbit for signs of flystrike, especially during the warmer months. Don't forget to check under the tail, around the rear end, and any folds of skin.
5. Fly repellent: Speak to your vet about safe fly-repellent products you can use on your rabbit's environment to reduce the risk.
What To Do If You Suspect Flystrike:
If you notice any signs of flystrike, contact your vet immediately. Early intervention is key. Flystrike is a very preventable condition, so by being proactive with hygiene and health care, you can keep your rabbit safe and comfortable.
