This World Autism Awareness Day, we’re recognising the incredible role assistance dogs play in supporting autistic adults.
From helping manage anxiety in busy places to providing grounding or calming deep-pressure therapy during sensory overload, assistance dogs offer practical support that can make everyday life more manageable.
Being an autistic adult can come with individualised challenges. Generally, there are misconceptions around autism presentations. Particularly within young women who may be diagnosed later in life, after years of masking or feeling misunderstood.
Many of our handlers are young adults at university, navigating major life transitions and growing independence. During this time, an assistance dog can be a key aspect of developing confidence and identity.
The structure of working with their dog often supports handlers to better understand their needs, communicate them to others, and feel more comfortable unmasking and advocating for themselves.
