So, it's been raining. ☔ A lot. You probably noticed!

If your paddocks are anything like mine, they are getting very muddy. And that means we run the risk (again) of our horses suffering with mud fever.

We are all aware we need to keep an eye on our horses' internal worm burdens by conducting faecal worm egg counts regularly, poo-picking our paddocks, and worming as needed but do you sometimes worry about external parasites? These are tiny bugs that live on the outside of our animals and can be responsible for turning your horse into an itchy, grumpy and miserable animal. And none of us want that!

External parasites can include pinworm, lice, mites as well as fungi and bacteria responsible for conditions such as mud fever.

Having products to hand to readily deal with any problems that may arise is your best bet to tackling them successfully at the very first sign of a problem.

Quarantining new horses to your yard is the first step to reducing the risk of infestations crossing over to your horse and disinfecting stables, wash boxes and tack rooms can help to reduce the risk further.

Make sure you are stocked up on products to help you minimise and manage the risk of your horse taking on board any unwanted passengers! C

Keeping your horse clean with more rain and the inevitable mud around is certainly an important part of keeping their coat and skin in tip top condition.

Are you lucky enough to have hot water at your yard? And (to me the sheer luxury of) a solarium to dry them in the cosy warm? Then winter bathing is probably much less of a chore (than for me 😭).

But if (like me) you don't, then consider a no-rinse wash to minimise the need to soak your horse in freezing cold water as much as possible. We are sure to have some milder, sunny days over the winter months (surely? please? 🙏) so pick those days, if possible, to give your horse a full bath.
