As a practice we are committed to inspiring and training the next generation of vets and veterinary nurses. From school students who want to find out if it is the career for them, to apprentice student veterinary nurses, and vet students who spend time with us on placement during their degree. Based on the lovely feedback we receive, we are hopefully doing something right 😊

Work is continuing at a pace at our new space on Walnut Road (number 16 – previously the site of Peter Gayton’s TV repair shop). This additional space will provide a dedicated nurse consulting space, and allow us to expand our existing pain relief/rehabilitation services to include canine underwater treadmill hydrotherapy. Loving our desk artwork created by Caz's husband Aaron 🤩

Will your dog be coming on holiday with you this spring or summer?

Here are some tips to ensure safe travels, share any of your own in the comments.

🚗 Your dog must be securely restrained in the car e.g., using a seat belt harness, dog cage or dog guard. Use the air conditioning in warm weather, and never leave your dog in a parked car in warm weather.
🚙 For a long journey, plan safe dog toilet stops and pack a source of water to offer your dog. Make sure they have their collar and tag on, and that their microchip contact details are up to date before you travel.
💊 Make sure you have enough of your pet’s regular medication before you go. Take your dog’s normal food with you or make sure you can purchase it locally; a sudden change of diet can cause a tummy upset.
☎️ Find out the contact details of a local vet, so you have a number to call should you need one.
⚠️Check out your new accommodation and local area before letting your dog loose. We have seen dogs injured from falling off balconies, for example. Be aware of any local dog dangers e.g., blue-green algae in lakes or ponds, or adders.
🐑 Follow the countryside code – keep your dog on a lead around livestock.

If you are planning on travelling abroad with your dog, check out the government pet travel website and speak to us well in advance so you know what you need to do.

Good question!

Good question!

have a small fold of skin on their outer ear? 🐱 This small fold of skin is also known as 'Henry’s pocket', but its formal name is a 'cutaneous marginal pouch'. The reason for the evolution of this feature is still unclear, but it is thought to assist in filtering sounds to improve detection of higher pitch or frequency, which is useful for cats when they are engaging in predatory behaviours, such as hunting prey.

It could also help the ear to fold flat against the cat's head. Cats may flatten and rotate their ears when they are feeling protective emotions such as fear, anxiety and/or pain. Cats actually have thirty-two individual muscles in each ear that allow them to move their outer ears independently of each other, and because of the large concentration of muscles within a small area, the ears have a diverse range of movement, allowing each ear to rotate 180 degrees!

A team from Greenbay recently attended a local schools healthcare careers conference. This is a great event hosted by enabling students from multiple local schools to explore careers in healthcare. Although the majority of the event showcases human healthcare careers, we were kindly invited to hopefully inspire a few vets and veterinary nurses of the future.

Greenbay owner Laura did a talk for the students who attended the event, giving an insight into a career as a veterinary surgeon and the training route. She was joined by RVNs Laura Sproul, Libby Mitchell and Ellen Higgins for the ‘carousel’ part of the event where students could chat to contributors. They used things like our CPR dog ‘Casper’, a quiz and photos to engage the students.

It was lovely to meet lots of potential vets and veterinary nurses, and provide them with advice about meeting their careers goals.

A reminder to make sure your contact details are up to date with your pet's microchip company. We can't do this for you, but can help if you are unsure which company your pet's microchip is registered with.

Please be aware of scams where companies pretending to be your pet's microchip company contact you and ask for a payment to remain registered, they can be very convincing. If in doubt always contact the company directly rather than clicking on email links, again we can help if you don't know which company your pet's microchip is registered with.
