A very poignant and sadly, true post:

Everyone who is thinking of getting dogs should read this because you need to understand this reality:

***I am a 21st century dog.***
-I'm a Malinois.
Overskilled among dogs, I excel in all disciplines and I'm always ready to work: I NEED to work.
But nowadays I get asked to chill on the couch all day everyday.

-I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors were selected for fighting bears.
Today I get asked to be tolerant and I get scolded for my reactivity when another approaches me.

-I am a Beagle.
When I chase my prey, I raise my voice so the hunters could follow.
Today they put an electric collar on me to shut up, and you make me come back to you - no running - with a snap of your fingers.

-I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
I was a terrifying rat hunter in English mines.
Today they think I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

-I'm a Labrador Retriever.
My vision of happiness is a dive into a pond to bring back the duck he shot to my master.
Today you forget I'm a walking, running, swimming dog; as a result I'm fat, made to stay indoors, and to babysit.

-I am a Jack Russell.
I can take on a fox, a mean badger, and a rat bigger than me in his den.
Today I get scolded for my character and high energy, and forced to turn into a quiet living room dog.

-I am a Siberian Husky.
Experienced the great, wide open spaces of Northern Europe, where I could drag sleds for long distances at impressive speeds.
Today I only have the walls of the house or small garden as a horizon, and the holes I dig in the ground just to release energy and frustration, trying to stay sane.

-I am a border collie
I was made to work hours a day in partnershipwith my master, and I am an unmistakable artist of working with the herd.
Today they are mad at me because, for lack of sheep, I try to check bikes, cars, children in the house and everything in motion.

I am ...
I am a 21st century dog.
I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, I stay in a bag...but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.
Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.
I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.
You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually I’ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.
If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!
If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.
I’m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.
So think **very** carefully before you choose your dog. And think about getting two, rather than one, so I won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for me to be alone.

Here is my safety check list for when you're on holiday with your pet:
1) make sure you're using designated pathways through private land- your dog can be legally shot in the UK if distressing livestock
2) work on your recall- if your dog is a 'wanderer', it is easy for thieves to grab and run- keep your dog close, and establish safe routes/ a semi routine to your walk in a new area if possible.
3) Don't leave your dog in a caravan when going out- find a local sitter. Dog thieves target caravans/motor homes/cars
4) Don't leave your dog tied up outside the supermarket- find somewhere you can shop with your dog, ask a family member to look after them, or order your food online and have it delivered.
5) Apply doggy sunscreen and use a flea/tick collar. ticks in the UK sometimes carry Lymes. Check online to find out if where you are visiting is a hot spot and prepare with collars and tic removal devices. Equally, If your dog has any skin exposure, especially around their nose, and especially if pink in colour, a doggy sunscreen is a must. It can also be used on yourself and is safer than most human sunscreens.
6) consider a gps collar, or engraving a new collar tag with the address of where you're headed. It costs less than a tenner to engrave a tag with a holiday address, and may be worth considering. Equally consider a GPS collar, even if you subscribe to it for just a month whilst you're on holiday.
7) bring cooling support- travel water bowls/cooling mats/ cooling dog neck liners- you may not know where the shady areas are in a new location, or whether water is on hand- always be prepared
8) don't leave your dog in the car. In the UK, double the temperature outside and imagine a baby in a fur coat left in the car- please keep your dogs cool and remember, if they are drooling, excessively panting, or moving slower than usual, give them a break, even if it delays your plans, and especially if on the beach.
9) use a dog crate/dog seat belt /dog grate in your car. It is against the law in the UK to have your dog loose in the car. Sometimes, it is up to the local council to enforce how strict this rule applies, and sometimes it's up to the police- now is the time to keep your dog safe and lawfully secure as police and councils know that in the summer, this law is most likely to be broken
10) clear away disposable barbecues safely. Dog's can severely burn themselves/cut themselves on those left behind.
11) check the beaches in a new location to see if there is a dog ban. Again, it could be a detriment to your dog's wellbeing if they can't run or cool off. They may disturb a barbecue or person on the beach if unleashed. Many beaches have a temporary ban during the summer months, as do some restaurants- make sure you have a plan before hand to avoid fines and unnecessary distress.
12) new dogs/new smells/ new environments can make your dog feel insecure, or anxious. Pay attention to body language and consider a long lead instead of a full unleash. You never know how unfamiliar dogs and territories will effect anyone's dog. Make sure that you spend some time familiarising yourself with dog self defence, and what to do in a dog attack. It's rare, but even the most loving of dogs, when feeling threatened or anxious may act differently.
13) dogs can sometimes go off their food when in unfamiliar territory- bring a good variety of enticing foods incase this happens.
14) consider a portable security camera. For around £20, you can buy a very good security camera with 360 angle turns and voice commands. Having one in your campervan/bnb room or handing to whomever is looking after your dog is a great way to check in on them if you need to leave them somewhere. You can even buy tiny 'dice' sized portable cameras that you can position wherever you need. A small subscription fee between £2-6 for a month could keep your dog secure whilst you're away, and if you're keeping your dog at home with a new sitter, you can check in, have a chat, or make them aware that there is a camera at work.
15) familiarise yourself with Hemlock water drop wort- a deadly plant that grows around water here in the UK. Not only can it kill your pet, it can kill you. Look for it around rivers, streams, lakes, beaches and wet woodland / moorland . It can grow to up to 5 foot high during the summer and is absolutely deadly. Always wash your dog down after entering new bodies of water.
16) finally, consider a dog first aid course. You'll learn all sorts of crucial lifesaving techniques like what to do in the case of drowning/heat exhaustion/twisted gut/cpr/choking/wounds and dog attacks; it is the best money you will ever spend. I highly recommend the BCS course. Being confident in these situations can really boost your bond with your dog, and prepare you for unexpected emergencies, most of which, happen when on holiday or in unfamiliar surroundings.

Please forward this post to anyone who may need it. It's a great little check list to keep you all safe and happy on holiday :)
