🌱 Spring has arrived, and while that lush green grass might look tempting for your horse, it can come with its own set of challenges. 🌿

Here are some key points to keep in mind this season:
𝟭. 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 - Ponies can consume up to 5% of their bodyweight in grass each day, leading to rapid weight gain.
𝟮. 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 (𝗪𝗦𝗖) 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 - High sugar and fructan levels in spring grass may lead to laminitis, colic, or tying up.
𝟯. 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁 - WSC levels in grass fluctuate, even throughout the day, making them difficult to predict.
𝟰. 𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝗴𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 – Depending on conditions, a 250kg pony could easily consume up to 2kg of simple sugars or 4.5kg of WSC from grass in a day!
𝟱. 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲𝘀 – Have been shown to reduce grass intake by up to 80%.
𝟲. 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘁 - Short periods of turnout can lead to over-consumption of grass, as ponies may eat up to 1% of their bodyweight in just 3 hours.

Keep your horse's health in check this spring with the right management strategies. 🐴💚

❄️🐛 If you've used moxidectin (in Equest and Equest Pramox) for your encysted redworm dose it will also treat any bot larvae present. These hatch in the horse's mouth from tiny eggs laid on the coat in summer and autumn. Over the course of about a month they slowly work their way down to the stomach and attach to the mucous membranes to overwinter there.

👀 Bot infection can be hard to detect as there’s no way to test for the presence of larvae in the horse. While it’s rare to find them expelled in the dung, some customers do report seeing them, so look out for these small pink armadillo shaped bot larvae that might appear after worming having been ousted from their winter digs!
