Lovely Albie was with us recently to be castrated and he got all the cuddles- look at his face, how could we not?! He enjoyed big hugs during his pre anaesthetic check over with the nurses and he gobbled up his lunch (after some hand feeding encouragement). Doesn't he look adorable in his medical pet shirt? 😍❤

With spring turn‑out upon us, it’s a good time to review parasite control plans, especially for bought‑in cattle.

New research from SRUC, Moredun, the University of Liverpool and the James Hutton Institute shows that 2/3 of cattle sold for breeding or fattening through GB markets carried roundworm infections, with signs of resistance to white wormers.

This means bought‑in stock can introduce unwelcome parasites and anthelmintic resistance to your farm.

Management of incoming cattle varies across farms, but parasite risks are often overlooked. The BRACE project is now developing practical recommendations, but here are the team’s top tips in the meantime:
✅ Assume all bought‑in cattle carry resistant roundworms
✅ Treat arrivals with an effective product (ask your vet; a lungworm vaccine is also available)
✅ Quarantine: yard for 48 hours post‑treatment and keep separate for ~3 weeks
✅ Check treatments worked via faecal egg counts at the correct interval
✅ Review parasite plans regularly as weather, grazing systems and parasite behaviour evolve

Good biosecurity and testing are the most effective ways to stop resistant parasites entering your herd.

Today at Woodside we said a very fond farewell and happy retirement to our receptionist Sheila. Sheila has been at Woodside for nearly 12 years, and during that time all colleagues and many clients have become good friends. We have had many laughs and good times over the years and we are all very sad to see her go. The good news is however she wont be a stranger as she is now the very proud owner of her own wee pup called Drum.

🚨 Hidden disease could be costing your flock 1000's of £ every year 🚨

MV often spreads silently for years, causing poorer fertility, reduced milk, lower DLWG and weaning weights, higher losses… and major financial impacts.

The PSGHS MV Monitoring Scheme offers a simple, affordable way for commercial flocks to check their MV status before problems escalate.

🔍 Why test your flock?
MV levels are increasing across the UK and can spread long before you see clinical signs.
Infected flocks face higher culling rates, smaller lambs, poorer growth, and reduced conception.
Early detection = better control + less long‑term cost.

🐑 What the Monitoring Scheme offers:
✔ Annual targeted testing of high‑risk ewes & rams
✔ A clear Monitored Status report
✔ Early warning of hidden infection
✔ Valuable reassurance for buyers
✔ Lower cost & commitment than full accreditation

Take control of MV risk. Testing is straightforward, targeted, and designed for commercial systems.

Protect your flock. Protect your business.
