VE Day – 80 years of peace in Europe

Today we honour the courage, sacrifice, and unity of those who brought peace to Europe in 1945.
From the battlefields to the home front, millions stood together to defend freedom and democracy.
As we remember, we also give thanks to all who served – then and now – we are forever grateful.

We will remember them ❤️💜

I'm looking for a lady that was with her rescue dog in in Bovey Tracey on Friday at around 10.30am.

The dog was called Hugo and was a large yellow labrador or labrador cross.

You were with a friend who had a Collie and there were some kids with you.

I was the lady with the black labrador and teenage girl.

Hugo came bounding over to say hello then it all went a bit pear shaped. You scared my dog but he's OK.

You told me he was a rescue and that you were working hard with him. I didn't hear the next bit but my daughter heard you say 'that's it, he's going back'.

Please don't send him back it's hard for rescue dogs (and definitely their new humans). He was probably just feeling a bit overwhelmed. These things happen.

I'd like to offer you a free 1:1 session to help you and Hugo.

It's not your fault and it's not his. Adopting a rescue dog is a journey, often a bumpy one. You can do this. Send me a message.

If anyone knows this lady please pass my message on to her. Thank you

Grass wee burns 🌿

I often get asked about how to stop wee burns on lawns; what can be added to the dogs water or food and do I stock those rocks/liquids you put in the water bowl?

While I understand that people don't like wee burns on their manicured lawn, I simply wouldn't dream of selling or using chemicals and risking damaging your dogs kidneys or taking your money for gimmicky things that won't work!

The following article is written by © Kayleigh Adams written for NO BULL Just Natural Health for Dogs. Written permission to share this article outside of the group has been given.

🌿 Grass wee burns

Dogs urine killing grass is completely natural. It’s due to the nitrogen in their urine from the normal breakdown of proteins, when it hits the grass it can ‘burn’ the area they wee on.

A common misconception is that the grass is damaged because of the pH (acidity) of the urine, but this is not true and we’d never recommend giving your dog anything that will upset the natural pH of their urine as this could cause all sorts of problems like infections or bladder stones etc.

Have a look at the methods below to help stop urine scalding your grass as these methods will not harm your dog!

🦮 The most concentrated p*e of the day is their first, so taking them out for a morning walk & wee instead of going out in the garden will help prevent burns.

🪣 If they do use the garden, wash it down with a bucket of water/hose straightaway to dilute the wee to help prevent the burns.

💦 Add more water to your dogs diet as the better hydrated they are, the more watered down their p*e will be naturally!

🪴 Another suggestion is to train your dog to use one area to go in the garden to keep the ‘burns’ in one area or consider getting a "p*e post" for your male dogs to use.

🍀 Introduce clover to your lawn - it’s extremely resilient to the effects of dog p*e and won’t turn brown like grass. Clover is technically a living mulch and has many superpowers:

It's forecast to be pretty hot this week so please take care of your pets and don't excercise them during the hottest part if the day.
If your dog does suffer from heatstroke here's what to do 🐾
🔥 Hot hot hot💧Wet wet wet ➡️ Vet vet vet

Hot Forecast Due 🌅

Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?

One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...

We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!

But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.

You should:

💧Get someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
💧Pour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
💧NB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
💧Do not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
💧Move to a cool, shaded area
💧Prepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

🌅International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
🌅Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
🌅Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
🌅No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with cold‐water immersion.
🌅Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
🌅Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

Please be aware if you're in the Teignmouth area 🐾

We’ve received a report of suspected Hemlock water dropwort roots (Oenanthe Crocta) - AKA 'dead man's fingers' - washing up along the beach at Teignmouth and possibly neighbouring coastlines.

Hemlock Water Dropwort is a very common native plant found along waterways across the UK. The roots look and smell like parsnips but can be poisonous to humans and animals if ingested. The roots are often washed down from riverbanks during the winter.

We would advise all dog owners to be vigilant and keep pets on a lead when walking near our coastlines.

If you spot Hemlock water dropwort roots on our coastlines, please let our Resorts Team know by email: [email protected]

Natural products for your pets, stylish outdoor wear for you

Pawsome of Topsham, is a lifelong dream of owner Alex Coulter, who envisaged a one-stop-shop bringing greener products for pets and pet owners together in one place. Devon born and bred, there was only one place Alex would open her first shop – Topsham.

“I’m a Devon lass through and through and spent my childhood years on the edge of Dartmoor and my youth in and around the Exeter area. I did move to Denmark in the eighties, spending those years in the construction industry while planning and plotting my return to Devon and the creation of Pawsome, to cater for discerning pets and their owners in a ‘Country Life meets mutts‘ kind-of-way!

I established myself back in Devon in 2019 and opened Pawsome of Topsham soon afterwards.

My dog, darling Archie was very ill while I was in Denmark, and alongside medical treatment, I started scouring the internet to see how I could help him with a healthier diet. When I saw how he responded to better food, my vision for Pawsome accelerated. To cut a long story short, I then researched more and more about the benefits of pet food without the ‘nasties’, and the idea was born. Since then I am committed to ethically sourced, high quality foods and want to share the benefits of a good diet for my pets with other people.
