Seals of the Northern Hemisphere

Not all seals are created equal.

From the icy Arctic to the Mediterranean and even the isolated waters of Lake Baikal, seals have evolved into an astonishing variety of species and forms. This chart showcases some of the Northern Hemisphere's most remarkable seals, including the Hooded Seal, Ribbon Seal, Harp Seal, Ringed Seal, Gray Seal, Baikal Seal, Caspian Seal, and the endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal.

Among the most unusual are the Baikal Seal, the world's only exclusively freshwater seal living in Siberia's Lake Baikal, and the Mediterranean Monk Seal, one of the rarest marine mammals on Earth. The striking black-and-white Ribbon Seal and the inflatable-nosed Hooded Seal demonstrate just how diverse these marine mammals can be.

Seals play a vital role in marine ecosystems and have adapted to environments ranging from frozen polar seas to temperate coastlines and inland lakes.

Today I went to look for Ben again but unfortunately I couldn’t find him. I mentioned a while ago that at the same location there were two common seals with our orange tags on. It took me three hours to be able to get something half decent to work with. I knew her number, yes it’s a female, was number 9 but I couldn’t see the year. I have finally ID’d the seal from facial markings, which took me another four hours to sift through. It is Hannah from Ullapool that arrived with us on the 26th October 2025, she was very unwell and was lucky to be alive. She was released on the 19th December 2025. So she has been on her own for just over five months and is looking fabulous. The other seal with her is also a female who I’ve yet to ID.
So rehabilitation does work and this is beginning to be the best year ever. I can’t wait to ID the other girl. So excited. Well done to all those who were involved in her rescue.❤️❤️❤️❤️🦭🦭

The first two pictures are of Hannah on release day. The next pictures are her today.

Here at the hospital we have a great team of local volunteers that work in the hospital itself. We also have a great team of seal pup assessors, these are volunteers that respond to call outs, assess a pup condition and help with transporting them to the hospital. We have assessors in Alness, Helmsdale, Brora, Dornoch, Golspie, Nairn, Tain, Embo, Findhorn, Fraserburgh and Ullapool. We also have an assessor on Benbecula, the western isles.

So should you see a seal in distress or you’re worried about its welfare, ring us immediately and we’ll get someone out as quick as possible.
Thank you.

**We could do with a few more assessors along the north coast and the western isles.**
