IMPORTANT- PLEASE READ
We have been made aware of a local riding school who have a case of strangles. Strangles is a highly contagious bacterial infection which can cause serious illness. Horses can be infectious with the disease for up to 28 days before showing symptoms and as a result even if you haven’t been with an “ill” horse you still need to take precautions to minimise the spread.
Strangles is spread through both direct and indirect contact meaning we can be a source of spread.
🐴If you have been in contact with another horse you must change all clothing and disinfect boots if you don’t have another pair to wear.
🐴Gloves and whips should not be used at any other stables. If they are, they will need to be washed before you can bring them down.
🐴Wash hands thoroughly before coming onto the yard
🐴When you come to the yard do not wander, touching the horses. Please wait by the barn.
🐴 Do not touch any horse other than the one you are riding or are asked to handle.
🐴 Don’t use brushes, mucking out equipment, buckets etc without asking first.
As strangles can be a very serious disease, we are being strict with our precautions. Please help us keep the ponies healthy.
For more information see the BHS website
Strangles is one of the most common diseases diagnosed in horses worldwide, affecting any age, s*x or breed. We see around 600 UK outbreaks each year.
