🐶🚜 IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR ALL DOG OWNERS – LIVESTOCK WORRYING LAW 🚜🐶
There has been a recent update to the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953 and it’s something every dog owner — especially those who walk near farmland, footpaths, or rural areas — needs to be aware of.
🚨 What’s changed?
🔹 Stronger police powers
Police now have expanded authority to investigate incidents of livestock worrying. This includes stopping and detaining dogs suspected of chasing, harassing, or attacking livestock — even if this happens on public footpaths, bridleways, or roads.
🔹 Wider definition of livestock
Livestock no longer just means sheep or cattle. The definition has been widened to include animals such as alpacas and llamas, meaning more situations now fall under this law.
🔹 Higher penalties for owners
Penalties have increased significantly. Courts can now:
• Issue larger fines
• Order owners to pay veterinary bills, losses and other costs
• Take a much firmer stance on repeat or serious incidents
🔹 Clear distinction between “attacking” and “worrying”
This is really important:
• Worrying livestock includes chasing, harassing, or causing stress
• Attacking livestock is physical injury or death
💯 Your dog does not need to bite or make contact for an offence to occur.
⚠️ Why this matters Livestock worrying isn’t just dangerous for farm animals — it also puts dogs at serious risk. Panicked livestock can injure dogs and in extreme cases, farmers are legally allowed to protect their animals.
🐕 What this means for you
✔️ Keep dogs on lead around livestock
✔️ Do not assume good recall is enough
✔️ Respect signage and farmland boundaries
✔️ Manage reactivity and prey drive properly
✔️ Take responsibility — legally and ethically
As trainers, our job isn’t just teaching skills — it’s helping owners understand real-world responsibility and consequences.
If you’re unsure how to safely walk your dog around livestock or rural areas, or you’re struggling with chasing behaviour or reactivity, get in touch.
Prevention is always better than damage control.
Trust. Patience. Consistency. 🐾💪
