1 thing I wish I knew before starting day care -

I wish I knew how much I was going to fall in love with the doggos. I knew I’d love them, but I didn’t realise quite how much. When I had Christmas off, I missed them like crazy. It’s so bizarre how I can tell who’s poo is who’s (gross I know), who’s walking towards me by the sounds of there paws and which toy is each dogs favourite.
Watching them all become best friends, learning and growing together - it breaks me.

Not only just my doggos though, but their owners too. I have the best doggo owners ! They all understand how much I love their dogs and the updates and random messages I get from them make me so happy. Thank you all for being amazing. 🥰♥️

I cannot believe it has officially been one whole year today since LK Doggy Day Care has opened. 🫣

This was the biggest leap I have ever made. To start my own business where nothing is guaranteed and build it from the ground up, has been the most challenging and stressful time.

But it has also been the best decision I have ever made. I have enjoyed (almost) every minute of it ♥️ I cannot thank everyone enough - from my other half who has been so supportive over the last year, to my family and friends for being there when I need advice or to vent, to my lovely clients and doggos who have all been so amazing and lastly, to my little Iris who has been amazing through all of the changes.

I cannot believe it !!!!!!! Now on to a new bigger and better year ♥️🫣🥹

Tips for starting a day care -

1. Drop your dog and leave ASAP – Just like dropping your kids off at school, they always do better once you’re gone. Don’t stick around, converse with your dog or stay to watch. Just hand the lead over, turn and walk away- I know it’s hard !
2. Give your dog time to adjust – If your dog hasn’t had much exposure to being in a daycare or pack setting it may take some time for them to adjust and get used to it. Don’t panic if they are a little uncomfortable the first few times or they don’t seem like they are eager to go in. Give it about a month of regular drop offs and see how they are doing. Many dogs loosen up once they have adjusted and although they started out apprehensive they end up having the best time.
3. Don’t check in every 10 minutes – the first few visits may not have much change. Checking in twice or three times a day is best so you can have an insight to their day. Checking in frequently can put the day care under pressure to take the ‘perfect’ photos where your dog will be happy and playing and this isn’t always the case. They will get there, just give them time !
4. Don’t sweat the small stuff – Just as with kids going to school, your dog is going to get a cold (kennel cough) once in a while or come home with some scratches on his face. That’s normal and to be expected. Don’t freak out, don’t blame the daycare and don’t overreact. It’s going to happen and it’s no big deal. The benefits of daycare far outweigh any negative side effects that may come along with them.
5. Do some homework to help your dog – If your dog has some issues (especially bad manners, separation anxiety or any kind of fear) don’t use daycare as your treatment. Make sure you do what you need to do to improve the issues so that your dog’s time at daycare can be the best it can be.
Often daycare can be a great tool to be used in conjunction with behavior modification that can have some really positive results for some dog problems.

Is doggy day care good for dogs?

Well here are 4 reasons -

1. Socialisation – If your dog is not exposed to other dogs in a natural way (off lead) regularly they can become anti-social, which presents as dog reactivity, anxiety and aggression toward other dogs.

2. Learning Social Cues – If dogs don’t get the proper exposure to other dogs they have a hard time reading them and get into more conflicts. It’s almost like they never learned the canine language.

3. Exercise – We all know that our dogs need exercise but very few people are actually doing something about it. The problem is usually that we just don’t have the time to run our dogs enough and/or we can’t give them the intensity they crave. Walking a dog 20 minutes on lead is not enough.

4. You Get A Break – Having a dog is like having a child – another living thing that is dependent upon you for survival. And it can be an exhausting day to day process (especially if you have a puppy or young dog) when you have to factor in your dog into your already crazy schedule.

HOWEVER, doggy day cares are not suitable for every dog. Some day cares offer different experiences so before you choose, make investigate ! You should only choose a day care that has a license - they will get you in for a meet and greet where you can decide if this would be the right environment for your dog.

I found this page where there’s tons of information - both pros and cons- of using a doggy day care. If you are looking to start your dog in a day care then I suggest reading through ! If you have any questions then ask me and I can help out ! I will be sharing more information from the page over the next few days. 🥰
