🦙 Vitamin D Supplementation for alpacas due now 🦙

Alpacas in their natural South American environment will be exposed to much higher levels of UV light compared to the UK. Since removing them from their natural sunny environment they now have a lack of UV exposure during winter months. It is therefore important to supplement Vitamin D to prevent poor calcified bones similar to those seen in human Rickets disease.

• Younger, growing animals will require up to three doses (November, January, March)
• All animals should be given one dose in November.
• Pregnant females should receive two doses in November and January.

💉 Vitamin D can be given by injection - please give us a call to collect some from the office or one of the vets can call out to administer ☀️

Important ⚠️ - Housing Measures have been introduced for Poultry from 0001 on Thursday 6 November 2025.

Following the escalating numbers of confirmation of avian influenza in kept and wild birds bird keepers across the whole of England must house all poultry and captive birds if they keep more than 50 (except in specific circumstances e.g. some zoo birds) or if they sell or give eggs away.

A GB wide Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) is also in place and requires all keepers whether they have pet birds, commercial flocks or just a few birds in a backyard flock to undertake enhanced biosecurity measures to mitigate the risk of further outbreaks of the disease. These enhanced biosecurity measures include reporting of changes in egg production, mandatory record keeping, disinfecting footwear, and cleansing & disinfecting housing and concrete walkways on a continuous basis.

❌Bluetongue Update❌

Last week we had a confirmed clinical case of Bluetongue in a ewe in Buckinghamshire which unfortunately did not respond to treatment and died.

A reminder of clinical signs in sheep:

- crusting nasal discharge and swelling of face/nose/neck
- congestion/swelling of the tongue
- ulcers or sores in the mouth and nose
- salivation/drooling
- heat/swelling/tenderness at the coronary band (where the skin of leg meets the horn of the foot)
- inappetence and fever
- breathing problems
-abortions
- death

Please contact one of the vets to discuss vaccination and how best to protect your flock/herd. Cattle can become infected and affected however clinical signs are generally milder.

A reminder that Bluetongue is a notifiable disease and must be reported. Please call us if you have a suspected case.

Have you heard of the ibTB map?

Information bTB (ibTB) is a free-to-access, online interactive mapping tool set up to help cattle farmers and their vets understand the level of bovine TB in their area and manage the risks when purchasing cattle. The tool was jointly developed by the Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA) and the Environmental Research Group Oxford (ERGO) and launched in 2015.

It is a great resource to use when thinking about purchasing cattle and can help you find out about the bovine TB situation in your local area.

More information can be found on the TB hub https://tbhub.co.uk/preventing-tb-breakdowns/protect-your-herd-from-bovine-tb/ibtb/
