I’m going to say it just once in the hope it points people in the right direction.
If you have a nervous/reactive/fearful dog, that gets over whelmed with passing dogs/people etc. When using operant conditioning to train your dog, positive punishment is not going to help them. It’s that simple.
Positive punishment means to add something that the dog does not like, when the dog has displayed a behaviour, to stop it happening again.
This means your prong collars. Your physical touch. Your shock collars. Your spray “correctors”, etc etc.
It absolutely breaks my heart to see dog owners being told my professionals to whack a prong collar on their nervous dog and all their problems will be fixed. They might stop their initial reaction for a little while. You might think all of your worries have gone. But you’ll soon realise that you’ve only forced your dog to shut down, created even more of a negative association to the stimulus, and ruined your relationship, only for it to come out worse later on anyway.
When Instead you could be working WITH the dog, building confidence, strengthening your bond and having clear communication resulting in a happier dog that’s able to learn and change the emotional response.
Please research the people you pay to train you and your dog. Please question any unkind methods. Look at the stuff they post, do the dogs in videos look happy and relaxed or do they look worried, confused or even fearful? There has been a HUGE rise in dog trainers and behaviourists who are, quite frankly, taking advantage of dog owners.
You, and more importantly your dog; deserve better.
