New for 2025 Our Winter Horse Health Examination for £140.00 running between 1st October 2025 to 31st March 2026

What’s included?
An in-depth examination and includes a heavily subsidised blood test.

Your vet will:

Listen to the heart and lungs with a stethoscope.

Look in his/her eyes with an ophthalmoscope.

Assess the legs, including feeling their joints, tendons/ligaments and looking at their hooves.

Look in the mouth and advise on what dental treatment may or may not be needed.

Assess the skin, including looking at any lumps or bumps of concern.

Your horse will then be trotted up to look for any subtle signs of lameness or more generalised stiffness.

Finally, a blood sample will be submitted for a general health profile, to look at their haematology and biochemistry markers. This can flag up issues such as liver, or kidney problems, inflammatory disorders etc. before external signs become apparent.

If your horse is due, or would benefit from an ACTH test for Cushing’s, this can be done at the same time (a fee may apply for the lab test if the horse is not eligible for a free test voucher – please ask our team if you’re not sure).

Also, if your horse is on long term prescription medication which necessitates a regular examination, eg. Prascend for Cushing’s or ‘Bute’ for arthritis, this can also be included in the assessment, as well as any guidance you may need from us about when to consider certain treatments or supplements.

We are offering this examination, including the blood sampling and laboratory fees, for a 50% saving of the usual fees, a great opportunity to pick up on any concerns you may have this winter.

To book a Winter Horse Health Examination for your horse or discuss this further with us, please call us on 01409 255549.

As autumn approaches, the risk of Atypical Myopathy rises, a devastating muscle disease that can strike horses suddenly and without warning. The disorder stems from eating sycamore seeds, seedlings and leaves. When eaten, they release a toxin that causes significant muscle weakness and damage.

What to look out for:
❗️Sudden stiffness or weakness
❗️Difficulty standing or walking
❗️Muscle trembling or sweating
❗️Dark, discoloured urine

If you notice any of these signs, contact your vet immediately. Early intervention can save lives.

How to reduce risk:
✔️Avoid grazing where sycamore trees may be present or nearby
✔️Remove fallen seeds and leaves from grazing areas
✔️Fence off access to areas of sycamore trees or where seeds fall
✔️Provide fresh hay and clean water at all times
✔️Seeds and seedlings can be tested to see how strong the toxins are. This can be arranged through your vets. 🍂

Well done to all our clients who competed at Camelford show yesterday, we had a wonderful time watching you in the ring and catching up with you on our stand.

A special congratulations to our client Sally Grigg and her wonderful American Miniature Horse stallion "Talkland Daddy Cool" for taking Reserve Local Champion! Chloe Taylor-Baker was responsible for showing him in the ring and did a fantastic job, especially in the championship where they were up against hunters and heavy horses towering above them.

We are sure you'll agree how amazing he looks pictured here with Chloe and duty vet Charly. The team at Penbode Equine would like to wish them the best of luck for the rest of the show season, and look forward to hearing all about it. 🍀
