Hey folks! Facebook prompted me to give y'all an update, since I haven't posted in almost a year.

I'm afraid I do not have more news about Pippin at this time :( but I'm hoping to chase up an update before the end of summer.

In the meantime, I have been getting my chicken fix elsewhere.

Namely the Caen Hill Countrysdie Centre in Devizes!

http://www.caenhillcc.org.uk/

This is a wonderful project in rural Wiltshire (what part of Wiltshire /isn't/ rural??) where they take in lots of rescue animals, battery hens and the like, and do some great work educating children and adults on a variety of topics.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to promote them, and maybe some of y'all will be inspired to pay a visit or support them in other ways.

In the meantime, here is a photo of me with a rooster who could very well be Pippin's cousin!

UPDATE! Chickens have been spotted in/around the area where Pippin was first rescued! Chickens that look a LOT like Pippin himself. Appearances suggest that they came from the yard of a house fairly near the road Pippin was found in.

The most important part of this news is that it looks like Pippin didn't fall off the back of a truck, and wasn't snatched by another animal and then lost. It seems like he may have wandered out of the yard and into the road on his own.

Next time I'm in town I may think about finding the house in question and letting them know they need to either do more to protect their chickens, or perhaps even consider not keeping these animals, since they are hard to contain without decreasing their quality of life. Living completely free range so close to the road isn't going to be good for them.

Also, who knows, I might find out once and for all what breed he actually is!

I was just thinking about how if all goes well Pippin and his lady chick might have tiny tiny fluffy footed babies in a few months and thinking about their floofs and their peeps and my proud boy being a daddy and it's raining on my face...

I think I'm starting to understand how/why people get so angry when you criticize their parenting, or even try to help (and thus inadvertently imply that somehow their own efforts are inadequate).

I've had about twenty people on Tumblr reblog that video of him, with comments that basically imply I'm an animal abuser, because it LOOKS like Pippin is too cold and I'm not giving him enough shelter.

Well. Y'all know our story by now. You know how completely unprepared I was for that little guy, and consequently how brilliantly resourceful I was at filling all of his needs, above and beyond the call of duty.

I daresay there never was a more spoiled house-reared chicken in all of the UK!

And, well, the results speak for themselves. A happy, healthy, handsome, robust, lively cockerel, brimming with personality. And also, amazingly, with strong instincts, taking to life as a proper farm chicken with style, strength, and grace, looking after his hens and protecting his terrority with care.

So when people who don't even know us try to imply that I don't know what I'm doing, that I somehow fell short in any way, that I was ignorant, negligent, or worst of all, deliberately malicious, IT MAKES ME FURIOUS.

And I'm not ashame to say I've torn some people a new one this week, because I'm fed up with it.

Now nearing seven months old, Pippin is a proud and exceedingly handsome young cockerel. His main girlfriend is a beautiful Black Langsham. They are both bantams, so they are smaller than the other chickens in the yard, but perfect for each other, and seem to get along really well! Pippin seemed to recognize me, and enjoyed the mealworms I brought him, but wouldn't let me pick him up! :( Which is as it should be, really... still :(
