Dr Elizabeth Mullineaux, the senior vice president of the British Veterinary Association (BVA), said recent surveys of the BVA's 20,000 members showed 80% supported a ban on general sale and more than 70% agreed blanket preventative treatment should stop.

"We're using these products really routinely and I think if you ask most vets what they do with their own pets, we don't treat our own pets in the way some practices are selling these products," she said.

Pet owners have historically been advised they should treat cats and dogs as a preventative measure every month.

Did you know that without dung beetles, the manure from just 12 cows could cover an entire acre of pasture in a year?

Dung beetles play a vital role in breaking down manure, improving soil health, and supporting healthy pasture ecosystems. However, some chemical worming products used to target intestinal parasites can also harm beneficial insects living within the dung.

Over time, this can reduce dung beetle populations, leaving manure to sit on the surface and form hard crusts instead of naturally decomposing.

Alongside growing concerns around chemical resistance and restrictions faced by organic farmers, this has encouraged further research into more natural alternatives.

Research carried out by Sarah Beynon BA as part of the Oxford University Ecology Research Group explored the impact of chemical products on dung beetles.

The findings showed that Verm-X did not have the harmful effects on dung beetles associated with many chemical-based products.
