🐾Training Tips Tuesday - Adolescence

Just like humans adolescence in dogs is a time of huge neural and hormonal change.

😱They may challenge boundaries, listen to strangers more than their caregivers, explore more, take more risks, make poor choices, be led by their emotions, show some reactivity.

It’s a time when emotional responses are outpacing their ability to think in the moment. 💥

But the good news is it’s also a time when they are very susceptible to reward giving lots of training opportunities!🎉

So if you have an adolescent dog
✅Keep up your training and make it fun and rewarding
✅Train anything that makes them think, get that brain working
✅Focus on your relationship and keep it topped up
✅Limit their choices so they don’t rehearse what you don’t want
✅Match where you take them to the skills they currently have not those you wish they had
✅Remember the dog you see today is not the same as the dog you’ll have tomorrow - adapt and flex to what they need right now.
✅ It won’t last forever and this is a natural stage of development for all mammals. You’ve got this!

❤️❤️Polly the gorgeous Vizsla first came to StressLess as a walk and train client needing a little support for reactivity around other dogs.

🙌🙌Her family had already done a great job with her training and wanted to make sure she was in professional hands to continue her growth.

✅With a few tweaks when we walk, creating space, giving her choices, growing alternative behaviours it’s hard to call her work - she’s turned into our weekly dose of joy!

These days she will happily pass strange dogs and just politely requests that offlead dogs don’t run in for a sniff - I mean, that’s just rude!

The gorgeous Mabel and Norah are settling into their new home.🏠

They are coping amazingly with a huge life change, building works and all the disturbance that brings. They are learning to feel safe and settle in their new environment.

They are finding a lot of things are important
😅arrivals and departures
😅their family moving around them
😅each other
😅and they worry about being left alone

We are helping them learn
✅ There is value in settling on the bed
✅ Movement isn’t important
✅ It’s ok not to have immediate access to their new family all the time
✅ Comings and goings are a non event
✅ A little independence is actually fun

Yesterday the family Janet, Andrew, Mabel and Norah smashed a session where the dogs worked individually on their disengagement skills while the other practised their boundary games.

🙌 A win win whichever game they got play!
