🐾 Be Kind, Not Quick to Judge: Why That Dog is Out in the Heat

When the weather warms up, we are rightly reminded to look out for our dogs. But sometimes, seeing a dog out and about on a hot day can lead to quick judgments about their owner.

The truth is, we rarely know the full story. Many dedicated owners find themselves in situations where keeping their dog with them is actually the safest or only option available.

Here are a few reasons why that dog is out with their human right now:

💚Holidaying Households: For families staying in caravans, tents, or park homes, indoor temperatures can spike dangerously high. Often, it is significantly cooler, breezier, and safer for the dog to be out in a well-shaded outdoor spot with their owner than left inside a stuffy, uninsulated holiday home.

💜Severe Separation Anxiety: Some dogs suffer from profound separation struggles. For them, being left alone can trigger severe panic attacks or self-harm.
Their owners are working incredibly hard on behaviour plans, but until that training progresses, the dog cannot be left behind. These owners often choose to bring their dog along to manage the heat together safely rather than risk a panic crisis at home.

💛Assistance & Therapy Dogs: Many dogs have vital roles to play. Whether they are supporting someone with a physical disability, neurodivergence, or mental health challenges, these dogs are out because their presence is an absolute necessity for their owner’s safety and well-being, regardless of the season.

🧡 Compassion Over Criticism

Managing a dog with complex needs during a heatwave takes an immense amount of planning, care, and dedication. These owners are often carrying extra water, checking pavement temperatures, sticking strictly to the shade, and doing everything possible to keep their dogs safe.

Next time you see a dog out on a warm day, let’s choose kindness over judgment. You might just be looking at a deeply responsible owner doing the absolute best they can in a challenging situation.

Have you ever had to navigate a hot day with a dog who couldn't be left at home? Let's share some supportive experiences in the comments. 👇

🐶It’s always lovely when an ex puppy client comes back for a top up. Jeff is learning that he can think when he’s excited and what’s more he can bring himself up and down in arousal with no problem.

🙌We use games to build those new neural pathways and he loves it!
