🌾🐾 Grass Seed Season is Here 🐾🌾

They may be tiny, but grass seeds can cause big problems for our dogs. These sharp little seeds can become lodged in paws, ears, eyes, noses, and under the skin, leading to pain and infection.

Keep an eye out for:
🐾 Excessive paw licking
👂 Head shaking or ear scratching
👃 Sudden sneezing
🐕 Limping
👁 Red or sore eyes

The best prevention? Check your dog over after walks, especially around their paws, ears, and armpits.

If you think your dog may have picked up a grass seed, give us a call - the sooner they're found, the easier they are to remove! ☀️🐶

🐶 Meet Flo! 🐶

Flo, a five-month-old Labrador, paid us an unexpected visit after getting herself into a bit of mischief in the garden!

Her owner discovered Flo playing with a small bird, and before they had a chance to intervene, this curious pup decided to swallow the bird whole! 😶‍🌫️

Recognising that this could cause problems, Flo’s owner brought her straight to the clinic. Our team was able to safely induce vomiting and retrieve the bird before it could cause any complications.

We're happy to report that Flo recovered well and is back to her usual playful, cheeky self! 💕🐾

A reminder that if your pet swallows something they shouldn’t, it's always best to contact your veterinary practice as soon as possible for advice. 🩺🐶

🤍 Packing and sterilsing surgical kits - Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month 🤍

Once a surgical kit has been used for an operation, it then has to be thoroughly cleaned to be used for other patients at a later date.

The each item in the surgical kit has to be scrubbed and soaked in an enzymatic cleaner for fifteen minutes. It then has to be transferred into disinfectant for a further fifteen minutes, fully dried and then repacked. Once repacked, it needs to be labelled to ensure sterility - the pack can only be kept for three months before it needs to be sterilised again. The pack is placed into an autoclave on a steam cycle.

Sterility strips are present on the pack, which will display whether the autoclave has reached the correct temperature and then the pack is safe to use.

The packing of the surgical kits is really important for infection control and patient safety.

Between both branches, we can complete up to ten operations per day, so you can imagine how many packs we go through 😶‍🌫️

🔥 Bank Holiday Weekend - Opening hours & advice for the upcoming heatwave🔥

Our opening hours over the weekend holiday weekend are as follows:
🐾 Atherstone is open as normal on Saturday until 12.45, but will be closed Sunday & Monday.
🐾 Tamworth is open as normal on Saturday until 16.45, but will be closed Sunday & Monday.

In the event of an emergency, please contact our out-of-hours service, Willows.
📞 0121 712 7070
📍Highlands Rd, Shirley, Solihull B90 4NH

We are expected some long over-due sunshine over the next week, with some areas hitting 30 degrees ☀️

Here are some tips on how to help your pets in the heat:

🐈 Shut the curtains early in the morning and keep them closed during the day, this will aid in keeping the room shaded and cool.
🐶 For pets with lighter coats such as white or ginger, you can apply pet-specific sun cream to their ears. This is especially important for cats who have outdoor access, as you will not be able to control where they go.
🐈 Provide a number of opportunities for fresh water, inside and outside.
🐶 Purchase cool mats - they absorb the body temperature to prevent over-heating
🐈 Try to keep them as calm as possible by not encouraging play, as this will only make them heat up quicker
🐶 Fill Kong's with some pet-friendly goodies and freeze them, this can be given to them during the warmest part of the day
🐈 Provide shaded areas outside
🐶 Encourage them to get wet - there's nothing like a doggy paddling pool!
🐈 Avoid travelling in the car with them

Most importantly, please do not walk your dogs during the day; take them out early in the evening or late at night when it is cooler.

If you're not sure, use the 'seven second rule' - place the back of your hand on the pavement and hold it for seven seconds - if it's too hot for you; it's too hot for them.

Wishing you all a lovely, sunny, Bank Holiday weekend ☀️

🤍 Anaesthetic monitoring - Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month 🤍

Here is one of our RVN's Ellie monitoring patient Elsa's anaesthesia, as you can see, Elsa bounced back not long after her operation!

Monitoring anaesthetic is a vital part of an RVN's role, where they will continuously monitor the patient throughout the surgery.

The monitoring process includes:
❤️‍🩹 Heart Rate
❤️‍🩹 Respiratory Rate
❤️‍🩹 Blood Pressure
❤️‍🩹 Temperature
❤️‍🩹C02 monitoring on the capnograph
❤️‍🩹ECG monitoring on the capnograph

The RVN's are the hidden hero's in surgery, ensuring the best patient care.

🤍 Urine testing - Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month 🤍

Every time we ask you to bring in a urine sample for your pet, our RVN's and Patient Care Asssistants will test it depending on what has been requested by the vet.

They may prepare the urine to be tested by an external laboratory, or we can run many urine tests at the practice - such as looking at the sediment, kidney function and a basic dipstick test which tells us about the protein, blood and glucose levels, amongst other things!

A sediment test involves looking at the urine under a microcscope after it has been spun at a high speed, which separates the sediment from the free fluid.

Can you guess what is in the urine? 🤐

🤍 Blood pressure monitoring - Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month 🤍

Here is Jasmine one of our RVN's modelling how they would perform a blood pressure check.

Blood pressure checks are carried out by our Registered Veterinary Nurses.

The nurses not only take the blood pressure readings, which are completed over forty-five minutes, but they also have an important role in keeping the patient calm this this is carried out - otherwise this can effect the overall result.

🤍 To celebrate Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, we want to give you an insight into the incredible work that our Registered Vet Nurses (RVN's) and Patient Care Assistants (PCA's) do 🤍

Our RVN's and PCA's work together to provide the best care to our patients, whether they're in for surgery or poorly patients needing extra TLC 🩵

The day involves:
🐾 Taking blood samples
🐾 Calculating pre-medications, setting up and monitoring fluid rates
🐾 TPR's (monitoring temperatures, pulse and respiration rates - this is done every 15 minutes for each patient after surgery)
🐾 Administering medications
🐾 Creating and implementing care plans which are tailored to each individuals needs
🐾 Feeding and exercising patients
🐾 Pain scoring - this is done to ensure your pets are comfy or if they need additional pain relief

Pictured is RVN Fiona, checking a TPR on Bo, who was very poorly and stayed with us ❤️‍🩹

We also have Megan, one of our PCA's and Bo's Mom, who is providing some TLC to a kitten who ended up in our care.

🧡 Happy National Receptionists’ Day 🧡

Our amazing Reception Team, who are the heart of the practice and often the first friendly face or reassuring voice our clients meet.

Being a veterinary receptionist involves so much more than answering phones and booking appointments. They are the calm in the chaos, supporting both our team and our clients through every kind of day.

Every phone call is about someone’s beloved companion, and our receptionists handle each conversation with compassion, patience, understanding, and care. From comforting worried owners to problem-solving and keeping the practice running smoothly - they truly do it all!

They are expert multi-taskers - answering calls, managing appointments and diaries, responding to emails, helping clients with questions, and supporting the whole team behind the scenes.

Thank you to our incredible reception team for everything you do each and every day. Your hard work, kindness, and dedication never go unnoticed, and we appreciate you more than words can say.
