A few weeks ago I asked you good folks 4 questions which seemed kind of random.
I did not think you would want to know the answers... Wrong.. sorry , near enough everyone has asked !
Here are the answers
Without boring you with a ten thousand word answer a quick summary.
1) Why did you get a dog?
Answers : The majority (above 90%) answered "because your family have always had a dog" I.e Learned Behaviour.
2) Does your dog sleep on your bed? If yes Why?
Answer: funnily enough I thought most folk would tell a bit of a tale here! But No... 80% said they did let their dog sleep on the bed, another 10% said they would but the dog chooses to sleep on the floor ( larger dogs long hair predominantly too hot)
3) Do you think your dog loves you more than itself ?
95% said Yes their dog loved them more than themselves.
4) Do you think your dog can feel & show guilt? If you have an example even better :-)
Answer : 85% felt their dog felt guilt or gave examples of their dog showing guilt.
So whats it all about... in short 50 years ago ( my parents generation) thought the dog was lucky to be indoors , on the bed ... absolutely not.
It is now a proven fact through some very clever advanced scans of dogs brains while conscious. The dog , who shares a home with another dog was scanned for brain activity in known "emotional" areas of the brain in a human, showed dogs can love as the same part of the brain that humans show love lights up under the scan, when their dog partner walks in. However, when their "human walks in" the brain goes into overdrive which shows that the dog loves the human more than themselves.... this is of course a very short version.
Can a dog show guilt .... 100% yes. We as humans and especially the "Establishment" do not like to think an animal can show "human emotions" and has been downtrodden by those that should know better, keep "the dog down" a dogs brain although much smaller shows all sorts of the same reactions as a human the same parts of the brain, which was totally unexpected as a dog is not just a sentient being , it is a fully sentient being showing all emotions, from sadness, anger, love fear, worry, anticipation.... etc etc.
Here's the hard pill to swallow, as uneducated folk on all things animal , dog etc we have always known a dog can "love" however it is only in the last few years the "establishment" have given in and accepted they were wrong and a dog can love.
So in short , we as untrained "dog scientists " dog owners, knew more than the professionals all along.
The American Kennel Club asked the question to "Single Human Dog Owners"
If you were to get a serious partner and they did not like your dog, what would you do?
80% said they would ditch the Partner.
15% said partner had a choice , get over it or leave.
5% said they would have to consider their future with their partner.
The really interesting thing to me is Not One person said they would get rid of the dog!
The Kennel Club said they would not have even asked the question even 30 years ago , as they would expect the dog to be given in to a rescue .
How things have changed ... a dog is never just a dog.
