Here's the moment Larry the budgie was reunited with her owners at Sutton in Ashfield Vets for Pets, after she escaped and was attacked by a magpie.

While enjoying some free flying time at home, Larry managed to slip outside. Her distraught owners searched everywhere but couldn’t find her. They thought she was lost forever until they saw a Facebook post from the practice about a budgie found after a magpie attack.

Larry’s owner Phoebe said, “Without Vets for Pets and the lady who found Larry, we wouldn't have gotten our little budgie back. It’s amazing how quickly we were reunited and helpful they have been since her attack. It’s a miracle.”

Vet Steph, one of the locally-based owners of Vets for Pets Sutton in Ashfield, said, “Larry had a lucky escape from the magpie, with only the loss of a few feathers. We were so happy to be part of reuniting her with her family."

Owner Kate says that four-month-old Bobby’s coat is gleaming, thanks to his diet of AVA and salmon oil.

Since coming home, cocker spaniel puppy Bobby has been on AVA. Kate, who shops at Pets at Home Southampton Shirley, said, “When choosing a food brand, my priority was that it be vet approved. AVA was something that Bobby immediately got on with. I also like to use salmon oil to keep his fur soft, hydrated and shiny. He’s doing really well, I can’t believe how fast he’s grown already!”

This , we want to tell you about vet nurse Debi from Vets for Pets Washington who, with the help of the local community, saved a kitten from a life-threatening flea infestation and gave him a loving home.

When the kitten was brought into the practice, covered in fleas and almost unresponsive, the veterinary team at Vets for Pets quickly jumped into action. With the community’s support, they secured a blood donor for a critical transfusion. Once nursed back to health, the kitten, nicknamed ‘Flea’, went to a local charity to find his forever home. However, Debi couldn’t stop thinking about him and has since adopted him.

Debi said, “In my 22 years of nursing, I’d never seen such a severe infestation. Especially at this time of year, it’s crucial to give your pets flea treatment. The smaller they are, the more impact a flea can have – it's not just a bite; it can be life threatening. It was amazing how the local community came together to help; from the lady whose cat regularly donates blood to the local charity that cared for him. He’s settled in so well back at home now and is really attached to my daughter.”

Meet sixteen-year-old Scooby, our Golden Pet of the Month for July!

Scooby has been with his owner Glenda since birth, and while he has slowed down with age, Glenda says it hasn’t stopped him from patrolling his garden. She shared, “Scooby used to be quite the hunter in his younger days, and although he can’t do that anymore, he still loves to potter around outside. After checking the perimeter, he usually enjoys a well-deserved nap under his parasol.”

Scooby earned the title of Golden Pet of the Month after Glenda entered a competition through an email we sent at the start of his birthday month. If your cat or dog is over seven years old and has a birthday coming up, they could win a Pets at Home goody bag and be our Golden Pet of the Month too! Keep an eye out for an email from us with a competition link at the start of their birthday month.

Maple and Oakley are all set for their first European road trip, in their matching 3 Peaks sets from Pets at Home.

Owner Jess is planning to take the adventurous duo across Switzerland and other countries along the way in a VW campervan. She’s been busy preparing them by introducing them to new environments and building their confidence.

Jess, who shops at Pets at Home Gloucester, said, “Maple and Oakley love exploring new places - especially if it involves water! They’ve been all over the UK and they are the happiest pups, with their noses always to the ground. We’ve been gradually introducing them to new environments and situations to help build their confidence, using lots of positive reinforcement (reward based training) and treats. I just know they will love it.”

Here’s Molly celebrating her 12th birthday with a homemade birthday cake from Luton Vets4Pets.

Molly has been visiting the practice since she was a little puppy, so when she was due to spend her 12th birthday with them, they couldn’t resist celebrating. Katherine, Molly's owner, said, “Molly’s part of Luton family, and they’re part of ours. I sent her in for her MOT wearing a birthday girl badge, and next thing I knew I had a video of them all singing happy birthday to her with a homemade cake and card. She didn't want to come home!”

Customer Care Manager Tina, who has been with the practice since it opened 15 years ago, remembers Molly as a puppy. She said, “When Molly first came to us, she was a small bundle of fur weighing 7kg. She's a kind, funny girl who is always so excited to be with us. We all love Molly very much.”

What started as a joyful engagement weekend for owner Georgia, quickly became an emergency when rescue cat Eddie needed urgent surgery at Vets4Pets Bradford Idle due to serious internal injuries.

When Georgia arrived home, she found three-year-old Eddie hiding under the bed, struggling to breathe. She rushed him to her local vets, where they discovered extensive internal damage compressing his lungs. Eddie was immediately taken into emergency surgery, where vet Tamsin and team worked tirelessly to save him.

Now Eddie’s home and on the road to recovery, Georgia can focus on celebrating her engagement. She said, “I feel so grateful to the whole team at Vets for Pets, I can’t express it enough. They were amazing, explaining everything in detail and showing compassion even when I was in hysterics. They’ve been my local vet for years - they’re superheroes.”

Vet Tamsin, who is the locally-based owner of Vets4Pets Bradford Idle, said: “Eddie suffered a significant trauma, likely from something like a road traffic accident. Recovery from such surgery is very difficult, and we are delighted with his excellent progress.”

Three-year-old Ted likes to fall asleep each night with a paw on his new favourite toy - Lilly Leopard.

Owner Tash picked up Lilly Leopard from Pets at Home Chelmsford, and says that she and Ted hit it off straight away. She said, “Ted likes to give Lilly a little wash and occasionally a nibble too. He carries her between his bed and wherever he likes to play during the day. Once he’s in his bed in the evening, I pop Lilly there too, and he falls asleep quite often with a paw or his head on her. It’s funny how they somehow decide which are their favourite toys!"

Vet nurse Shannon from Vets4Pets Lichfield is so passionate about animals that she also fosters pets for a local charity while they wait for their forever homes.

For the past seven years, Shannon has been fostering with Wonky Pets Rescue. Her latest foster is seven-month-old Storm, who regularly visits the practice. Shannon said: “As you can imagine, the team at Lichfield are very animal orientated, and love seeing Storm. Bringing him in helps with his socialisation. Fostering is incredibly rewarding; it’s nice to be able to give them a home environment instead of kennels while they wait for their new home.”

Storm is already reserved, but many other special dogs are waiting for great homes. Tracy from Wonky Pets Rescue appreciates the help of foster carers like Shannon. She said, "As a small but specialist home based rescue it is imperative for us to have dedicated, experienced foster carers like Shannon. The added bonus of her being a RVN means we can rest easy knowing any dog in her care will received the greatest of care. We are so grateful for her help along with all of our other valuable foster homes.”
