🐴 Trainer Tuesday – Meet the Coach!

This week we introduce you to Christy Shuall!

Christy is a BD UKCC Level 2 Coach, BD List 5 Judge, BHS Stage 3 Coach, and a regular BD competitor. Her journey started as a pony-mad six-year-old, progressing through Pony Club and eventing before switching to dressage at 15—when her horse showed a clear talent for it. She hasn’t looked back since!

💬 Christy says:
“I think being involved in the sport from all perspectives (judge, coach, rider) helps me give my clients a fully rounded approach to their training. Being a judge helps me understand what’s seen from ‘C’, while competing myself means I truly empathise with riders—because we all have good days and bad! What matters is how we learn from them and come back stronger.”

“For me, it’s all about getting the basics right. Even as you move up the levels, the Scales of Training are always key.”

With a keen eye for detail, Christy focuses on correct training, rider balance, and straightness—bringing out the very best in every partnership. Her sessions are fun, supportive, and tailored to help riders achieve their goals, big or small.

Christy is also a qualified BD Youth Coach and Skills Assessor. Sessions are available at her base in Bishopston, Swansea, or she can travel to you.

📍 Get in touch to book your session! Remember, you can record sessions through BD Wales Flexi Training: https://horsemonkey.com/uk/equestrian_event/86709/FLEXI+TRAINING+Wales+Region+-++All+Coaches

Phew! Nationals 2026 done! Not quite the test I would have liked, Zorro was a bit tense all the way through so just fussing in the contact and at one point even managed to get his tongue over the bit I think 🙈. We got through it, but not with his usual panache which is a shame but we shall chalk it down to experience! Got a respectable 68%+ score with the judge at C having us in 5th place on 71%+! Zorro is chilling now and Leon and I treating ourselves to dinner and a well deserved drink ! Journey home tomorrow !

❤️Flo’s week ❤️
So I was of course given the ok to start rehab with this angel before Christmas but life got in the way! But this week we started again. This is her second time in the school since June last year. Wish I’d filmed the first time - we had elevated passage plus canter 5m circles round me 🙈. Not what the vet advised re rehab work at all! But pretty standard behaviour for Flo 😂. She’s a sensitive, stressy mare who is eager to please but loses her sh*t if the slightest little thing is different. I’ve done an awful lot of TRT stuff to teach her to relax and become grounded in the past, but have let her be since her diagnosis in June. So I was really pleased with this. Plan is to carry on groundwork, work with the tools, then bridle, roller and long reining until June. Re-scan and if still ok we can think about riding again. I’m 50/50 as to whether rehab will be successful. She weaves like a nutter which doesn’t help so I haven’t been able to box rest her as that would have been worse for her, so we are a bit up against the odds, but we shall see! Fingers crossed everyone 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

****Regionals Round Up*****
Well what a day, is all I can say. Main lesson learnt is to check your tyres the day before a competition not when you hitch up an hour before you need to leave with a muddy horse still to wash and plait up 🙈😳😩. Apologies to those living near my yard for there was a lot of swearing going on 😂. Thanks to all that offered to help and loan me their trailers, much appreciated! Our horse community really is a lovely one ❤️❤️❤️
Our run up to regionals hasn’t been as smooth as I would have liked tbf. Covid for me at the start of the year meant his Xmas holiday was extended to 2 months, so main effort was to get him fit enough, which we did (just), but meant we couldn’t have a pre-show run through. In fact when I pulled my show hat out my bag I was reminded that we hadn’t been to a show for 3 months as my hat had gone mouldy inside 🤢. Oops! Mould roughly wiped off as running late by then and straight on head to be properly cleaned another day and into the warm up we went.
He took a while to settle, when he’s a little nervous he either goes into ‘charge’ mode, or tense ‘I’m just going to hold myself all together and be good but a little stiff mum’ mode. I prefer charge mode, easier to ride. But Sunday he was in tense mode. Managed to pretty much get him out of it, and the test felt nice with a couple of minor tense moments where the contact could have been a little softer at times. Overall I was chuffed to bits with him, as always! Fingers crossed for that wildcard to the Nationals 🤞🤞🤞🙌🤩.
