Everyone wants to be a breeder until…
-you have to sit on the floor for hours, supporting your queen who is about to give birth, sometimes this is a whole day/night event.
-you’re having to be up every 2 hours for weeks, supporting babies that aren’t thriving on their own.
-mum has no milk, you are now the mum, you have to be there for everything… feeding, toileting, cleaning.
-you’ve spent weeks on end fighting for one kitten to live, it dies, and you have to sit there, wondering what you could have done differently to try save it.
-you spend hours or days researching things to make you a better breeder, in any way you can.
-family events, social times? Cancel it. Someone in the house is relying on you.
-The money you have spare in your account… holiday? Treat yourself? No. Keep it. A emergency vet visit can happen at any point, keep it aside.
-Kitten families, past, present or future have messaged, pictures, updates, you have to respond, bad for the cattery if you have low response time.
-Keeping up with social media, MUST, soon as you fall back with social media appearances, enquiries go down, views go down, followers stop growing.
-Appointments, appointments, appointments… vaccinations, spay, neuters, post ops, viewings, consultations ect ect
-twice daily kitten weigh ins! Incredibly important to spot early signs of failure to thrive, best time to be able to catch something before it becomes a massive problem!
Everyone always just sees the ‘ahhh best job in the world’ but they don’t see the 24/7 work that goes into it. Everyone just sees cute, fluffy babies, get to sit cuddling, playing, taking pictures, but nobody sees the physical work. The mental, and physical commitment you need to give your cattery.
I would never, ever change what I do for the world, besides the struggles, heartbreak and sadness, when things go well, it is the most reward job you can have❤️
