A few moths ago the FBU for MAWW conducted a survey to gather data and feedback from serving firefighters in regards to the shift changes being proposed by management. Nearly 200 respondents took the opportunity to give a qualitative answer to the following question - ‘Do you have any additional comments on how a change to your existing shift pattern may impact you and your family?’– here are some of their responses:

“This would have a major impact on my family, as my wife and I currently work opposite
shifts and the timings of my shifts suit this well. Also I coach my sons football team as
when I can around my current shift but with this proposal this can would be effected. My work life and family life will be majorly impacted by any shift change and has the potential to force myself to re-evaluate my current position within the service.”

“It will negatively impact my time with my family and time spent doing my hobbies and
out of work activities which contribute to the maintenance of my positive mental health.”

“Any changes to my current shift pattern would have extensive implications on my ability to care for my children and my own social and mental wellbeing.”

“If the shift pattern was to change this could affect me hugely due to childcare issues.
With the current shift pattern I am able to drop my child of before the start of work and
pick them up at the end off shift.”

“It would have a significant impact to my and my family's well being.”

“My current shift pattern is family friendly and allows me to have a good work/life balance
and fulfil my duties as a parent.”

“A change in shift pattern would limit the amount of time I see my partner and family. It
would also impact badly on my commitments outside work. Changes to shift patterns
and times would have a negative impact on my life.”

“It would negatively impact my family life as well as my commitment to my on call station.”

“It would be catastrophic.”

“Would consider other employment due to work life balance.”

“A change to my shift pattern would significantly harm my ability to care for my children and my family! So much so that I may have to leave the job I love for over 20 years just to look after my children! I am a single parent and as it stands I can get help with
childcare on my present shift pattern. But if my shifts changed I would not be able to get
any childcare so would have to think wether I could keep my job as a firefighter!”

“Not only am I joint carer for my disabled younger brother but my mum of 80 years old, isstarting find it difficult. The threat of shift change will have a massive effect on my carer
responsibility.”

“Other shift patterns will result in myself paying more for crèche for my little one
financially crippling my family.”

“If my shifts were to change it would massively impact on my family as i am a single
parent with two children i have to take to school. Changing times on shifts currently
would not allow me to carry on in my job role as the goverment do not provide childcare
before 8 o clock in the morning.”

“I won’t be able to provide the care that my family needs if the shift pattern changes.”

“Financially the cost of childcare will increase to £240 a week. This is because at present
I only have to cover my 2 day shifts. With the change I will have to cover 5 days and as
such it will increase my care fees by 135.”

“The proposed shift pattern would quite frankly be hell. I am currently planning on
starting a family as a single parent. The service already make it difficult for returning new mothers by not adopting the ‘52 week maternity’ but The proposed shift pattern makes it almost impossible for me to be able to do the job I love and raise a family.”

Two damning reports have revealed the extent of bullying, harassment and discrimination in North and Mid and West Wales fire services. Survey respondents reported experiences of abuse, and systemic failings by senior leaders.

Gareth Tovey, FBU executive council member for Wales said: "We stand firmly with the victims of this appalling behaviour, and continue to fight for members who face discrimination at work".
