๐ฑ June is Feline Hypertension Awareness Month ๐ฉบ
Did you know that high blood pressure (hypertension) is a common condition in older cats, yet many show no obvious signs until serious complications have developed?
Hypertension can damage vital organs including the eyes, kidneys, heart, and brain, potentially leading to sudden blindness, worsening kidney disease, heart changes, and neurological signs.
The good news is that early detection can make a huge difference. Regular blood pressure monitoring, particularly in senior cats and those with conditions such as kidney disease or hyperthyroidism, allows us to identify problems early and begin treatment before irreversible damage occurs.
Signs of hypertension can include: ๐พ Sudden blindness or changes in vision
๐พ Dilated pupils
๐พ Increased vocalisation or confusion
๐พ Changes in behaviour
๐พ Seizures or collapse in severe cases
Many cats with hypertension show no symptoms at all, which is why routine health checks are so important.
If your cat is over 7 years old, has been diagnosed with kidney disease or hyperthyroidism, or you're concerned about their health, speak to our team about blood pressure monitoring.
Early detection saves sight, protects organs, and helps keep our feline friends happy and healthy for longer. ๐
