Remember How Far You’ve Come

On any training journey, there will be stages that feel difficult—mentally, emotionally, and even physically. It’s easy to get caught up in the challenges, but it’s just as important to take a step back and recognise how far you and your dog have already come.

A good training plan isn’t only about setting your dog up for success—it also needs to work for you. You’re the one putting in the time, effort, and patience, and that deserves acknowledgment. Dog training isn’t always straightforward; it can test us in ways we don’t expect, especially emotionally.

As humans, we often focus on the negatives—the setbacks, the behaviours we wish were different, or the way progress doesn’t always look like we imagined. But we rarely give ourselves enough credit for the positives. Those “small wins” that may feel insignificant in the moment are actually huge stepping stones toward long-term success. Every time your dog makes a better choice, every time you stay consistent, every time you celebrate progress instead of perfection—you’re moving forward.

The key to setting yourself (and your dog) up to succeed is shifting your perspective:

Celebrate the small victories, even if they feel minor.

Acknowledge the effort you’re putting in just as much as the results.

Set realistic goals and take baby steps—it’s the little changes that add up to big transformations.

Training is a journey, not a race. When challenges come up, pause and look back at where you started. Chances are, you’ll realise you’ve already achieved more than you give yourself credit for.

At Ultimutt Dog Training, we believe that success is measured not just in your dog’s progress, but in your growth as a team. So remember to celebrate the journey as much as the destination—you’re doing better than you think. 🐾

Just a quick reminder that we will not be training tomorrow due to me being at my friend's wedding.

(Although looking at the predicted temperatures it does look like it may have been too hot to train)

Enjoy your bank holiday and I will see you all soon!

Last night I watched this amazing webinar.
This is an area of training I am so passionate about and one I feel we need to share more amongst the dog training, dog professional and owner communities.
The benefits are truly incredible and speaking from experience, cooperative care can make sure an huge difference to both your dogs life and yours!

Consent-based training for dogs means teaching and working with them in a way that respects their comfort, body language, and choice. Instead of forcing or coercing, the dog is encouraged to willingly participate. This approach is increasingly popular among trainers, vets, and behaviorists because it builds trust and cooperation rather than fear or resistance.

Why it’s good for dogs:

Respects autonomy – Dogs can “say no” by stepping away or showing stress signals, and the handler listens. This helps the dog feel safe.

Reduces stress and anxiety – When dogs aren’t forced into situations, they’re less likely to become fearful or defensive.

Strengthens communication – Dogs learn that their signals matter, making them more likely to communicate clearly and calmly.

Improves learning – A relaxed, willing dog learns faster and retains training better than one trained under pressure.

Encourages cooperation – When dogs realise they have a choice, they often become more willing to participate (e.g., offering a paw for nail trims).

Benefits (for both dog and human):

Stronger bond – Trust grows when the dog knows their person respects their comfort.

Safer handling – Less resistance and fear reduce the risk of bites or struggles during grooming, vet visits, or daily care.

Long-term results – Consent-based training builds lasting confidence and good behavior, not just quick fixes.

Better emotional well-being – Dogs feel secure, empowered, and happier when their needs are considered.

Positive reputation – For trainers, rescues, or owners, it shows commitment to kind and ethical handling.

Lately I’ve been learning so much about the power of consent with our dogs, especially when it comes to touch.

Dogs can’t use words to say “yes” or “no,” but they’re always telling us how they feel if we take the time to listen. A “yes” might look like leaning into your hand, nudging you for more, or choosing to come closer. A “no” might be turning their head away, shifting back, or walking off. Both are equally important — and both deserve respect.

What I’ve realised is that honoring these signals isn’t just about avoiding conflict. It’s about building trust. Every time we let our dogs know their voice matters, we create a space where they feel safe, understood, and respected.

With Bumblebee, this has been life-changing. The more I listen to him, the more I see his personality unfold. The more I respect his “no,” the more freely he offers me his “yes.” Our bond has grown into something so beautiful — not because I’m asking him to obey, but because we’re learning to communicate, to understand, and to meet each other where we are.

It’s such a simple yet powerful reminder: when we give our dogs the gift of choice, they give us back their trust and love in ways deeper than we could have ever asked for.

A massive thank you to everyone who came along to the social walk this morning!

I couldn’t be prouder of you all.

Social and training walks are something I absolutely love because they give us the chance to put our training into real-life situations and environments.

Today I saw every owner and dog shine in so many different ways. Each dog has their own individual needs, and it was incredible to see how well they all coped — a true credit to the owners and their understanding of their dogs.

Well done, everyone! 🐾✨
