⚠️ Yesterday we looked at where blue-green algae is found and what to do if your dog is exposed. But why is it so dangerous?
The answer lies in the toxins produced by some cyanobacterial blooms.
🧠 Neurotoxins attack the nervous system and may cause:
• Drooling
• Disorientation
• Muscle tremors
• Seizures
• Collapse
• Breathing difficulties
🫀 Hepatotoxins attack the liver and may cause:
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea (sometimes bloody)
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy
• Jaundice (yellowing of the gums, eyes or skin)
• Acute liver failure
⏰ Symptoms can develop within minutes to hours of exposure.
❌ There is currently no antidote for blue-green algae toxicity.
If you suspect your dog has been exposed:
🚿 Prevent them from licking their coat and rinse thoroughly with clean fresh water.
📞 Contact your vet immediately, even if they are not yet showing symptoms.
🐾 Early veterinary treatment gives dogs the best chance of survival.
