I’m blessed to have two boys healthy, happy and crazy enough to keep their old man company as we drive across Europe to Barcelona in our own Mario Kart. We head off next weds evening on the "Barmy to Barcelona Wacky Rally".

We are raising money in memory of two lovely young men, Sam and Neil, the loved ones of one of our current RVG team, Donna and two ex RVG'ers, Michael and Jot.

Even if you don’t feel able to give please follow our crazy journey which starts next week as I think we all need something to smile about .

Thanks!

Tim

It's not too late to book on the BEVA advanced equine ophthalmology course in Gloucestershire next week. This is a unique opportunity to spend 2 days with a team of 4 equine ophthalmologists with a whole day in the wet lab . This course only runs every 2 years and was delayed last year to not clash with the equine themed autumn BrAVO meeting - don't miss it !!!

This two-day course aims to bring delegates up to date with the rapidly expanding field of equine ophthalmology whilst giving the opportunity to learn new ophthalmic surgical and examination techniques in a wet lab with expert tuition on hand.

First iPhone X macro images . This is a two step keratectomy for an infected Stromal ulcer . The iPhone X light is covered by the macro lens I’m using so we have to use a “modelling light “ (in this case a hand held head torch) to illuminate the eye . This is a really useful technique as by changing the angle of illumination we can highlight different things . In The first image I am aiming my light at the lens surface so that light bounces back through the cornea (retroillumination) - I’m using this to see how transparent the cornea is to help me decide if I’ve removed all of the necrotic tissue . The second and third images use the wide Angle and the telephoto lenses (both with macro lenses attached) with the light aimed across the lesion (hence the shadows on the ketatectomy) this shows us the depth of the lesion and tells us about the surface texture .

The IPhone X (and the Iphone 7plus and the Iphone 8plus ) all have two lenses , a wide angle and a telephoto lens . I prefer to have a macro lens built into the case (so I can’t lose it as easily ) and for the iPhone X I’m trying a case type macro set up https://www.amazon.co.uk/Docooler-Protective-Wide-angle-Fisheye-Telephoto/dp/B078PDK87H.

Normal equine fundus taken on the iPhoneX using the wise angle lens . I’m not quite close enough to the cornea and the pupil wasn’t fully dilated which is why you can see the shadow from the pupil edge along the top of the image

Which phone is best for taking pictures of the eye ?

For those of you who’ve visited the clinic or heard me teach you’ll know that we rely on phones to help document the changes we see in the spectacularly beautiful equine eye .

We’ve a web site (www.theeyephone.com) which is dedicated to trying to spread the word that we can all take great images of our horses eyes. This allows us to send the best pictures we can when worries about our cases or our own horses when looking for advice .

Well I finally decided to go for the eye wateringly expensive iPhoneX to see i could get better images. Top tip , GiffGaff.com offers a refurbished (near pristine condition ) and a secondhand (data cleansed and checked ) phone store .

Got my iPhone X and so far I’m not 100 % convinced it’s the best option. I’m going to try and do a comparison in the clinic over the next few days and I’ll let you know how I get on 🙂

The iphoneSE is a really good option and is super cheap but on paper the camera on the X is both better and closer to the light source so should be the best .

The lens array is arranged vertically rather than horizontally which I’m taking a little while to adjust to as I’ve got to change the way I hold the phone
