This morning, Becca was asked to speak about increasing vet fees on Somerset . You may have heard today that the CMA is investigating rising vets fees and looking for pet owners input here https://connect.cma.gov.uk/vets-provisional-decision .

It's important to note that vets fees are rising for many, many reasons (drug costs, qualifications costs, training costs, equipment costs, Brexit, the pandemic, licensing etc.) - it is not just corporate greed as some of the headlines make out. The vast majority of vets go into the industry because they love animals and want to make a difference to their lives, not because they want to make lots of money. This is still the reason but there is a lot of corporate influence in vets in the UK now with a lot less independent practises. Transparency of fees may help but most vets will give you these already if they don't automatically do this, they will if you ask. It would be nice if insurance companies were looked at too so that as the premiums rise so does the level of cover to match.

Vets have a tough enough time, with su***de rates being double that of medics and dentists and over 4 times that of the general population. It is not the majority of practising vets setting the fees so be kind to your vet at all times. They will take you through the best days and worst days of your life πŸ’œ.

To listen to Becca this morning listen in at 16 minutes ish https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002kh97
