🐴🦠Strangles Awareness Week 🦠🐴

Testing, treatment and prevention

Testing

-Blood - this tells us if the horse has generated an immune response against the disease. A positive result does not mean the horse has strangles, but does mean it has been exposed, so a guttural pouch wash is then recommended to determine if the infection is current.
-Nasopharyngeal swabs
-Guttural pouch wash - looks for DNA of bacteria within the guttural pouch of the horse.

Treatment

-Supportive, depending on individual horse
-Lancing of abscess
-Antibiotics are generally not used as they can slow resolution of the disease, but can be used in some cases

Prevention

-Avoid sharing tack/brushes/rugs etc
-When at shows/away from yard don't allow your horse to touch other horses
-Isolation protocol with moving horses
-Good biosecurity and hygiene standards

Vaccination

Please call Avondale equine if you would like a chat about strangles or the new vaccine.

Jen was out recently to do some chiropractic adjustments to little Lilly 🐴

🌼Lily was displaying signs of stiffness on her right reign so her owner booked Jen to come out to assess.

🌼We found Lilly's pelvis was stuck in flexion and her neck and poll had restrictions on the right. These subluxations were adjusted and Lilly was given 24 hours off from ridden exercise.

🌼Lilly's owner reported that gradually over the next few days after her adjustment she noticed big changes on her right reign. Lilly's owner also noticed when doing carrot stretches in the stable that her movement was much more free and Lilly was more willing.

🌼Depending on the issue usually 3 sessions is recommended initially. Sessions after that if required can be spread out.

What is an RVN?

An RVN is a registered veterinary nurse.

Legally a veterinary nurse (VN) must be a registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) to practise in the UK.

A VN gains their qualification by training with an approved course provider, this may be as an apprenticeship scheme or a university degree. Whichever route you choose, you also need to register with the RCVS to become a student veterinary nurse (SVN). You can choose a small animal or equine route when studying.

Once they have passed their theory, oral, and practical exams the SVN needs to apply to the RCVS to become registered and pay the registration fee.

Once registered, the RVN needs to follow the professional standards set by the RCVS, pay an annual fee to stay on the register, and complete 15 hours of continuing professional development per year.

If you, or a friend, are interested in becoming a veterinary nurse you can find more information about this on the RCVS 'I want to be a veterinary nurse' website page
