🐾 Zillia’s Incredible Journey 🐾

From being found trapped in an abandoned building in France… to a safe and loving home in Worcestershire 💕

When Zillia was found, he weighed just 2.5kg — heartbreakingly underweight for her size.

Our nurse, Demi, carefully designed a delicate feeding programme using special nutrition to help her recover, while watching closely for Refeeding Syndrome — a dangerous condition that can occur when severely malnourished cats are fed too quickly after starvation. This condition can be fatal, so every step had to be done slowly and with great care.

Thanks to his new owners dedication Zillia has now:

✅ Gained strength and weight, she now weighs an amazing 6.92kg

✅ Passed all her health checks

✅ Got him his very own passport

✅ Moved into her new home with her loving new owners

International Assistance Dog Day 🐾

Today's post is on behalf of our lovely client Zena explaining how important assistant dogs are and how much they have impacted her life on a daily basis...

I am totally blind. I have no confidence in getting around using a white cane. The day I had my first guide dog was a life changing experience.

My first guide dog was a yellow Labrador named Amelie. She was such a sweet little girl and loved working. She gave me so much confidence so I was able to go into town and just generally get out of the house on my own.
She actually saved my life the one day as we started to cross a pedestrian crossing, which was our right of way, when a car shot across in front of us. She swiftly turned me around and got me back to the path without realising straightaway what she was doing. I definitely owe my life to her. That day made me realise how magnificent an assistance dog is.

She retired from working a week before her 11th birthday. We kept her as a pet until she was nearly 16 years old when we sadly lost her. She inspired me to run the London Marathon to raise money for Guide dogs.

My second guide dog was a Labrador cross golden retriever named Betsy. Whilst having Betsy, I went through some health issues and ended up in a wheelchair for a while but persevered and now with mobility problems have to use a crutch. Betsy soon adapted to this in a slightly different way and became both my guide dog and slightly assisted me when out and about with my balance problems. She had to retire earlier than normal because she had a tumor in her eye and had to have it removed. We still have her now as a pet dog, although she still tries to help me in all ways she can.

My third and current working guide dog is a black labrador named Yukiko. She was born in Japan, hence the unusual name, and her sister and her came over to England in a swap with Guide dogs from here in order to get new blood into the breed. Sadly, but lucky for me, they were not able to breed from her and put her through to guiding. Her sister has had her first litter of puppies for Guide dogs.I have only had her for a year so far but she is certainly stepping up to the mark along with her predecessors.

All three dogs have and are brilliant in the work they do, but you could not imagine how different each character has been and is. They have certainly changed my life and given me more confidence and I cannot speak highly enough of all the work and help they do.

🐶✨ Post-Surgery Boredom Busters for Your Dog! ✨🐶

Just had your dog spayed or neutered? 🩺

While rest is essential for healing, recovery doesn’t have to be boring! Here are vet-approved, low-energy activities to keep your pup mentally stimulated without disrupting recovery:

🧠 Food Puzzles & Slow Feeders – Engage their brain with puzzle toys or treat-dispensing balls that encourage gentle movement and problem-solving.

🐾 Frozen Kongs – Stuff a Kong with peanut butter, canned dog food, or treats and freeze it. It keeps them busy and cool!

📚 Training Games – Practice gentle, non-physical commands like “sit,” “stay,” or “paw.” Short sessions = big mental workouts!

🛏️ Scent Work Indoors – Hide small treats in snuffle mats or around the room (no jumping!) to spark their natural sniffing instincts.

🎵 Soothing Sounds – Calming music or dog-friendly TV can help reduce anxiety and provide background comfort.

💤 Cuddle Time & Rest – Most importantly, allow plenty of time for naps and quiet bonding. Recovery is the priority. 🐾💖

Our Story

Bay Tree Vets has been a companion animal veterinary practice for over 20 years. Originally a subsidiary branch of a larger practice, it later became an independent practice in 1998 when it was purchased by Mr. Robert Green.

Today the practice remains independent and is owned by Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Laura Taylor BSc MA VetMB CertAVP(VD) MRCVS.

Laura took over the practice when Mr Green retired in late 2019. She lives locally and has worked at Bay Tree Vets in the past. After graduating from Cambridge University in 2008, Laura has worked in several practices in Worcestershire and further afield. She completed an advanced certificate in veterinary dermatology in 2016 and enjoys all aspects of general practice. A strong believer in keeping veterinary practices independent and local, Laura hopes to continue the tradition of Bay Tree Vets that Mr. Green created over the last 20 years.

All at Bay Tree would like to thank Bob for his many years of service and wish him a very happy retirement.
