Critiques from Mandy Romeo-Dieste:-

Thank you to the committee for the kind invitation to judge at your lovely show. Well done to the exhibitors for keeping the dogs cool in the heat of the hall and for your lovely entries.

German Shorthaired Pointer
Puppy (2,1abs)
1st Samria’s Winterwell The Card Player (AI)
Smart young dog of 7mths. Moderate length of neck, deep enough in rib at present with room to drop. Good length of back and moderately turned rear. He was very collected on the move for his age. BP

Yearling (2)
1st Peebles’ Seasham Too Much Heaven JW
A very pleasing outline on this young lady. She has a good head and eye colour, slightly sloping shoulder with short back and good width of loin. Her rear is well bent with short hocks. She is in hard condition which gives her powerful movement. BOB.
2nd Angus’ Edelmidpoint Silhouette For Sparkenhoe
Another nice bitch here. She has a muscular neck and good shoulders down to her nicely set tail. She has lovely compact feet and well placed elbows. On the moved she was accurate and covered plenty of ground. RBOB

Graduate (2)
1st Angus’ Edelmidpoint Silhouette For Sparkenhoe
2nd Tudor’s Orchidstar Memphis Gold at Brocador
Masculine young dog, showing strength in neck and back line to nicely set tail. He stands on good bone and well arched feet with strong, well muscled thighs. Unfortunately the heat may have got to him and he paced which made movement difficult to assess.

Open (6)3abs)
1st Angus’s Keigame Hearts Desire of Sparkenhoe (AI) JW
I liked this bi***es head and expression, she has sufficient length of neck, short back with slight fall of croup to correct tail set. She is mature in the body and has a well turned stifle. On the move she was the most accurate and showed a good open stride.
2nd Russell’s Fraulunzway Lightening Bolt JW
Upstanding dog with a lovely head and ear placement. He has nice length of upper arm and well developed forechest. Quality bone and compact feet. On the move I just felt the winner was more accurate on the day.
3rd Peebles & Hammond’s Seasham The Groover

German Wirehaired Pointer
Open (2) Both these dogs were giving their handlers a hard time.
1st Turnbull, Turnbull, Turnbull & Keene’s Glenquin The Colonel at Elagram JW BOB
Exuberant young dog of quality. I really liked his balanced head and eye colour, complemented with good furnishings. He shows strength in his clean neck, good shoulders and deep in rib. He is firm in the back with good tail set. His coat had the better texture and he is in hard condition. Once he settled on the move I saw enough to give him the class and BOB
2nd Turnbull, Turnbull, Turnbull & Keene’s Kimmax Two Kan Play at Elagram (AI)
Another with a good head of balance and furnishings. I preferred her length of upper arm to 1. She shows enough depth of rib and good elbow placement, She has a strong topline and good tuck up to her loin with well bent stifle. She moved true fore and aft.

Pointer
Puppy (5,1abs) This was a lovely class. Thank you.
1st Matthews’ Sonham Just Good Friends (AI)
Plenty to like about these two sisters. Super length of neck showing strength and slight arch. Well laid back shoulders and good width and depth of rib. She is well developed in rear showing good with great width of thigh and short hocks. Correctly set tail which was held well on the move. She went with drive and ground covering action for a baby. BP & delighted that she went on to RBPIS.
2nd Matthews’ Sonham Just A Pretty Belle (AI)
Splitting hairs with her sister, I preferred the head of the winner. Another showing great Pointer type, lovely neck and shoulders, Quality oval bone and the best of feet. She was accurate on the move with smooth action in profile.
3rd Kennedy’s Droveborough’s Black Magic

Yearling (5,1abs)
1st O’Neill’s Tenshilling Shboom JW
Masculine dog of great balanced and substance while still being graceful. I loved his head and eye. He has a good neck, sitting cleanly in his well placed shoulders. His rib is well sprung and leads to nicely arched loin. He drove well from his rear and showed good open stride in profile. Pleased to give him BOB & thrilled he finished up RBIS. Well done.
2nd Stilgoe’s Teisgol Rose Campion
Feminine lady of different type. She has a balanced head with closely set ears. She is good through the shoulder down to her muscular loin and nicely set tail. Her rib is deep enough and her elbows well placed to allow good forward action. Her rear is well developed to give driving movement from the rear.
3rd Stilgoe & Fox’s Teisgol Alohomora

Graduate (9,6abs)
1st Stilgoe’s Teisgol Rose Campion
2nd Kennedy’s Droveborough’s Hells Bells
Good head and eye with nice length of neck. This girl has width across her back and loin with nice tailset. She is deep enough in rib and shows well developed first thigh. She has good bone and good oval feet. She moved well showing free flowing action.
3rd Wynne-Evans’ Droveborough’s Royal Flush

Open (6,5abs)
1st Phil’s Sunhouse Black Is Black at Solmonmist JW (AI)
This boy has an attractive head of good width of skull. Enough length of neck and good front angulation. He holds a strong topline with strong loin. His rib is deep with correctly set elbows. Quality bone and well arched toes. His stifle is well turned with good width of thigh. His movement was accurate showing good drive from his rear. RBOB

Weimaraner
Puppy (3,1abs) Two very different puppies
1st Hawkins’s Schonhund Show At The Oscars
Top size and although he has plenty of substance, he will take time to come together. Moderately long in head with good balance of skull and foreface. He is clean in neck and has a level topline with good tail set. He already shows good depth of rib and is short in loin. He has good bone and feet with a well developed first thigh. He gave his handler a hard time on the move but got it together enough to give him the class and BP.
2nd Jefferies’ Rivertone Athena Over Silbermeer
Unfortunately this young lady was not happy today, making it very difficult to access her. She has a pretty head and I preferred her eye of colour over 1. She is balanced in body and has enough bone for her size. On the move she was quite distracted which was a real shame.

Open (2,1abs)
1st Jefferies’s Rivertone Aurora Over Silbermeer
I liked the head on this young bitch, she has a good eye shape and colour with nicely placed ears. Enough bone and good feet. She has a lovely front with pronounced forechest and good depth of rib. Her rear is well developed with good width of thigh and correct tail set. On the move she covered plenty of ground and was true for and aft. BOB

AV Puppy Dog (18, 9abs)
1st Hart’s Gilligrae So Berry Excited IRWS
What a smart IRWS puppy. He has a broad head which is slightly domed with good eye colour. He already shows substance without being over done which gives him plenty to grow in to. Clean in neck with well laid shoulders. He is deep in rib and has quality bone with close knit feet. He is nicely angulated in the rear and has short hocks. He has a tendency to pull away from his handler on the move but he was still free striding and drove himself around the ring. Should have a good future.
2nd Bradley’s Nyllaup Oregon Sunstone IWS
A strong neck and powerful shoulders on this boy. He has good length and a slight barrel to his rib. He is short in back with strong loin. Movement was sound with good reach and drive.
3rd Hawkins’s Schonhund Show At The Oscars.

AV Puppy Bitch (19,11abs)
1st Roberts’ Byphar Havana Club
This bitch really caught my eye on the first go round the ring. She a small dome to her head with well developed eyebrows. Her neck is slightly arched and strong with well laid shoulders and good elbow placement. She is compact in body and has good width across her loin. The rear is well developed and she is already well muscled. Her movement is free and covers the ground easily which scored her Best AV Puppy over the dog.
2nd Kennedy’s Droveborough‘s Black Magic
Third in the lovely puppy class in the breed. Lovely head of good proportions with dark well shaped eye. Well laid shoulders in which her neck sits cleanly. She has good depth and enough width of chest with quality oval bone and super feet. She moved well, driving from behind.
3rd Osborn’s Elgert Blackpink
Completed a nice trio of babies

Brace (3,1abs)
1st McDonald’s IRS
Nicely presented IRWS mother and daughter. Both happily wagging their tails in unison. Both have pleasing heads and good depth of chest and well placed hocks. They moved well together on even strides. Best Brace.
2nd Searles’ SWD
Sorry for no critique, but the exhibitor left before I could make any notes.

Show: Mid-Western Gundog Society
Date: Sunday 29th June 2025
Judge: Mrs Sandy Lane (Kulawand)

Thank you to Mid-Western Gundog Society for inviting me to judge some lovely stakes and veteran classes, BVIS, BIS and BPIS. I had a fabulous day judging some excellent gundogs. This show has many variety classes and the exhibitors seemed busy and happy despite the weather being a tad on the hot side; a truly good-humoured atmosphere. In the end, I decided to judge the Best In show inside the halls, since the floor was even and the sun was just a bit too hot when the clouds disappeared in the outdoor rings. All in all, a very friendly society that truly enjoys holding a proper gundog show. Thank you to my superb stewards for organising the ring so competently.

Junior Stakes Class (31 entries, 10 abs)
1st Kennedy’s Droveborough Hells Bells
A very super class where several of them could have won today but my first place was a liver and white pointer bitch who took my eye on the move with a fabulous reach and equally strong rear drive. She is very well made, with well-laid shoulders; a good return of upper arm, straight forelegs and beautifully arched, neat feet. Standing, she gives a clean and impressive outline.
2nd Clunie’s Warrentor Abilene
Another good mover, this time a golden retriever bitch who was shown in good coat with a feminine head, dark eyes, good reach of neck and a level top-line. Tail carried correctly level with the top-line on the move. Standing with straight forelegs, she also has a good bend of stifle, well-let down hocks and straight back pasterns.

Champion Stakes (12 entries)
1st McDonald’s Sh. Ch. Roanjora Rioja Crianza
A very well-made Irish Red and White setter bitch, with a proportionally broad head with ears set level. She has a relatively dark eye. Her neck is well-moderately long into well-laid shoulders and has a balanced return of upper arm. She was shown in good coat, with a good spring of rib and a well-muscled body which ensured she moved well with good reach and drive.
2nd Falconer’s Sh.Ch. Contemporary Beguile Again via Siatham JW
A very neat and pleasing golden retriever bitch with a feminine balanced head. Ears well set, eyes very expressive with good pigmentation. Standing she has equally good fore and aft angulation creating a pleasing outline. Her shoulders are well laid back onto a level top-line and well-set tail. She also has good bend of stifle. An efficient well-made and fit body creates efficient movement. A little more coat could have made her top jolly.

Veteran Stakes (7-9 years old) (16 entries, 2 abs)
1st Moutrey’s Sunzo Songstar
A 9-year-old red cocker spaniel bitch presented with a very well-prepared coat. She is well b***d and very fit. She has a balanced head, pleasing eyes, a square muzzle and she has a good well-muscled neck onto sloping shoulders, a good spring of rib and a level top-line sloping slightly into her tail set. She has straight forelegs with neat feet. Always standing with a pleasing balanced outline and she moved very efficiently around the ring. Best Veteran In Show.
2nd Oliver’s Olivesong Kiss Chase
A 7-year-old pointer bitch with a very clean outline. She has a good reach of neck, well sprung ribs and a short-coupled loin. To complete her out-line she has a well-muscled correct bend of stifle, with straight hocks and the neatest of feet.

Veteran (10 years +) (5 entries, 3 abs)
Only two 10+ year old dogs in this class and both were remarkably fit for their age.
1st Wall’s Meadowpoint Spirit of Fire
This male pointer was shown in good hard condition and moved well. He has a masculine head with good pigmentation. His body was well muscled, which enabled him to move efficiently.
2nd Saunders’ Moonstryder Eliza Taylor At Oxfordogs VW
A black cocker spaniel bitch, very well-made with a feminine well-balanced head and a good body. She is well sprung in rib, short coupled and well b***d. She was shown in very good coat but was not quite as settled today as she should have been.

Best In Show

BIS: Griffin’s Griffial Back to Black
At just a year old this, happy go lucky, black cocker spaniel bitch draws the eye on the move; reaching and driving extremely well with a well-constructed body. Fore and aft, she has equally good angulation. This youngster is well off for bone. Her front legs are straight, she has lovely neat feet and equally straight back pasterns and well-let down hocks. This youngster must have a very bright future.
Res.BIS: O’Neill’s Tenshilling Shboom JW
A young male pointer, again with exceptional movement carrying his tail level. He covered the ground with ease and showed extremely well. He has good dentition, a pleasing masculine head, good reach of neck, well laid shoulders and a good return of upper arm. Well-muscled spring of rib, a correct sloping top-line and a strong, short, dense and smooth coat with lovely shine. His rear angulation complimented his forehand construction.

Best Puppy In Show

BPIS: Dring’s You’re My Dream Smeline Svaja (Imp LTU)
A very striking black & white American Cocker Spaniel. To go over this youngster was very pleasing, as her confirmation is very balanced. Her head is correctly proportional with a correct scissor bite. She has a lovely gentle feminine expression. She has straight, well-b***d forelegs. Her shoulders are clean and she has an equally good return of upper arm and to complete her excellent balance, her stifles are well bent and well-muscled for a youngster. She has the most attractive movement with a come look at me manner and a happy look-at-me attitude. Really pleased to award her Best Puppy In Show.

Res.BPIS: Matthews’ Sonham Just Good Friends (AI)
There were some very good dogs at this show and this white and black pointer bitch was particularly very attractive with a clean well-muscled good reach of neck. Her forequarters and hind quarters angulation are equally correct and also well-muscled. She is very typical of the breed and her movement is very sound and pleasing to watch.
