FCRS Novice Field Trial 2026

Our 12 dog breed only novice field trial will be on Saturday 19th December 2026 near Retford, Nottinghamshire.

The FCRS is delighted that so many handlers, trainers have taken part in the Working Flatcoated Retriever Development Programme this summer. (We’ve had 57 handlers and dogs taking part in 14 WFRDP training days this summer, working towards Foundation, Level 1 or Level 2B)
Pictured is Katie Aldred’s Geoff (Bakerstreet Charlie) who recently completed Level 2B of the WFRDP, having undertaken training WFRDP training in the Southern Area.

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Flatcoated Retriever Society Puppy Page.
We have listened to feedback from Flatcoated Retriever owners not knowing where to go to purchase a responsibly bred puppy, as it can be a lottery out there.
We hope that the Puppy Page will be a service to ethical Breeders as well as genuine puppy purchasers once it is established.
We are grateful to our litter Secretaries, Shirley Johnson and Jenny Bird for all their years of service to the Society and breed. We are happy that they have agreed to work alongside this new initiative.
Shirley and Jenny are still the first point of call for a Breeder who wants to place their litter on the puppy page.
A form is available on the website for Breeders to download and fill in but it is for Shirley and Jenny to request you to do so.
For litters to be advertised on the website the Breeder agrees to abide by the Code of Ethics of the Flatcoated Retriever Society and also to abide by the Royal Kennel Club Best Practice.( Elbow scoring will be encouraged but not mandatory at this stage)

The Canine Genetics Centre are excited to undertake new research to investigate the genetics of Renal Dysplasia (RD) in Flatcoated Retrievers, in the hope that we can identify genetic variants responsible for the disease and help breeders avoid breeding affected puppies in the future.

This research is funded and supported by the Flatcoated Retriever Society UK, Southern Flat Coated Retriever Club, Flatcoated Retriever Club of Scotland and the Northern England Flatcoated Retriever Association (NEFRA) - we are very grateful for your support ❤️

The Flatcoated Retriever Society UK 2027 Calendar is now available to order.
To get yours visit the Society shop page on their website https://www.flatcoated-retriever-society.org/shop/ where you can either download a printable order form or order via the online form (please be advised payment cannot be taken via the website, so payment will need to be made via either BACS, PayPal or Cheque, details of which can be found on the forms. Once payment is received the order will be posted).
Calendars will also be available at certain shows, so look out for updates on this.
All profits from the sale of the calendar will be divided equally between K9 SAR and Pet Blood Bank UK.

Many congratulations to Tanya Beard and Nova (Tychosmoon’s Light The Way) who passed their RKC Working Gundog Certificate on dummies on 6th August ‘26, with Quincegrove Gundogs. This achievement is made all the more significant as Nova and Tanya are also competing successfully in Agility. Way to go Tanya and Nova!

Results of The Euro Challenge 2026
- which took place over two days at The Game Fair, held at Ragley Hall Warwickshire on 24 – 26 July.

The competition is for teams of three retrievers – one labrador, one golden retriever and one other retriever breed. Six teams took part with five running a flatcoated retriever.

After two days of intense competition in a very challenging environment the results were:
1st Belgium
2nd Netherlands
3rd Great Britain
4th Eire
5th Germany
6th Switzerland

Top Scoring Flatcoated Retriever and awarded The Flatcoated Retriever Society Salver:
Ursula von Felten from Switzerland with Ayokas Elani Callista

The Martin Dealy Memorial Trophy, awarded for Commentators Choice, went to Ronny Rayen from Belgium with his Flatcoat, Flatgold’s Nothing Else Matters.

Live Game Training 7th October near Sherborne Dorset

FCRS walked up live game training (plus some mini driven), 60 bird day, refreshments provided.

Suitable for novice and open dogs with prior experience of picking game * and no known eliminating faults. £135 per dog, please contact Jane Manley at [email protected] for more details and to book a place. **

Eligible for the Society’s Live Game Training Subsidy (£50 per day), which can be reclaimed after attending the training day, subject to the rules of the subsidy. Please contact the FCRS Treasurer
Heather Harley for a claim form, which will need to be signed on the day of attendance and returned to Heather.

* If your dog has not picked game before, please also contact Jane who may be able to provide training to introduce your dog to game prior to the day.

Both the live game day and any introduction to game training with Jane may be appropriate for those following the WFRDP pathway on game to achieve items on the checklist for Levels 2A and 3A (Level 2A being the introduction to game for dogs that have not previously picked fur or feather and Level 3A being Shoot Experience and Control, Obedience, Hunting and Retrieving Game). More details about the WFRDP on Game are available on the Society’s website under the heading “Training.”

** Members of the society will have preference if the day is oversubscribed.
