You may think that the most common cause of ear problems are simple infections but this is not the case. It is most often due to parasites, foreign bodies e.g. grass seeds or an underlying allergy.

Ears are part of the skin and so poorly ears can be the first, and sometimes only, sign of an underlying allergic skin disease.

If you notice any redness, inflammation or darkening of the skin on your pet’s outer ear (pinna) and/or their ears are itchy we would recommend a check. Early identification of the underlying cause helps to reduce the risk of chronic ear changes which helps reduce
the risk of recurrent ear problems.

If your pet has recurrent ear infections or recurrent ear irritation, it could be a sign of an underlying skin condition – we would recommend a check to examine and discuss your options.

Look out for these common signs 👇

👀 Avoiding eye contact
Turning their head away, looking down, or giving “side eye” rather than looking directly.
👅 Lip licking or yawning (when not tired or hungry)
Often a calming signal when a dog feels uncomfortable or worried.
🐕 Crouched or tense body
Lowering their body, tucking the tail, or appearing stiff and frozen.
🐾 Paw lifting or slowing down
Hesitation, stopping suddenly, or carefully approaching something they find worrying.
😁 Appeasement (submissive) grin
A pulled‑back “smile” used to diffuse situations — not the same as aggression.
