Autumn Pet Toxins: Acorns

Acorns are also a choking hazard and can cause intestinal damage if ingested whole. Signs of acorn poisoning to look for include vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and dehydration. In rare cases, untreated incidents of acorn poisoning have led to kidney and liver failure, so always speak to your vet as soon as possible if you suspect your pet has ingested acorns.

Clover Belle💙

This beautiful girl spent the day at our Longton practice for her Laparoscopic spay procedure.

This procedure is to remove the ovaries laparoscopically so there are 3 small incisions rather than 1 larger incision.

The benefits of a Laparoscopic spay are:
-Generally quicker recovery period
-Reduced tissue handling
-Subjectively less painful
-Smaller wounds

Clover Belle was such a brave girl🥰

If you would like to know more please contact our Longton practice on 01782 319847.

Autumn Pet Toxins: Horse Chestnuts (conkers)

The toxic ingredient in conkers is also found in the leaves and bark of the tree, so keep an eye out to make sure your pet doesn't eat these either. Conkers are also a choking hazard, and can potentially cause bowel obstructions if swallowed whole, which may require emergency surgery. Signs to look for in your pet include vomiting and diarrhoea, excessive drooling, excessive thirst or reduced appetite. In severe cases, ingestion can cause muscle tremors or seizures.

Teddy🤍

Unfortunately, little Teddy had luxated his hip during a play accident🥹

Hip luxation, also known as hip dislocation, happens when the ball-shaped top of the thigh bone (femoral head) comes out of its socket in the pelvis (acetabulum). When the hip is luxated, it can cause a lot of pain and make it impossible to move the leg normally.

Teddys hip was attempted to be put back in place using the closed method which involves manipulating the leg and hip joint externally without surgery to relocate the femoral head back into the acetabulum, this method was unsuccessful and so Teddy needed surgery to have this put back in the correct place.

Our Veterinary Surgeon, Ondrej, performed a tricky procedure to secure everything back in place to ensure this does not happen again for poor Teddy, if this surgery had failed Teddy would have had to have femoral head and neck excision surgery. This surgery involves a more invasive surgical procedure where the head and neck of the femur are removed, after this the body creates a "false joint" made of scar tissue, which allows the surrounding muscles to support the limb.

The surgery was very successful and Teddy was such a brave boy throughout everything, he was on restricted exercise for a while whilst he was recovering, he has now been fully signed off and is doing really well🥰

Hip dysplasia is a developmental condition in dogs. This is usually due to genetic predisposition and the dysplasia develops or worsens as the dog grows.

Hip dysplasia can occur in any breed of dog. It is typically associated with large breeds such as Labradors, German Shepherds, Rottweilers and Saint Bernards, but is increasingly being diagnosed in smaller breeds such as French Bulldogs
