Some videos of the dogs at yesterdays course running 🤩 (other videos in comments, as ever I didn’t manage to video many runs 🤦‍♀️)
Some were preparing for the start of the show season after a few months off competing, and Benji was coming back to hoopers after several years break and looking fantastic🔥
Loved the space and surface at Conquest Centre I’ll definitely be back there for more course running, and look out for a post about regular classes coming soon!

Happy 13th birthday Finn 🥳🎂 somehow the boy made it to his teenage years! He’s broken himself so many times (mostly through stupidity and not listening) and had a good few health scares so I have no idea how he made it but I’m glad he has.

He wakes me up at least once a night because he accidentally got off the bed and thinks he needs permission to get back on, he whines when I eat or if anyone has a better bed / chew / toy than him, his recall is becoming increasingly questionable and his health isn’t great but he’s absolutely loving life still and so much fun to be with. Hoping he might follow in his sister’s footsteps and mange a few more birthdays🤞

It’s so nice to have some sun at last ☀️ I’ve had poorly old dogs on and off for a couple of weeks but both seem to be doing ok now, enjoying their walks and refusing to acknowledge that they aren’t puppies any more!

We had a lovely warm mud free walk at Woof Hall Dog Field today, Florrie got to practice her weaves while Fly provided a useful distraction digging in the sandpit

So proud of my crazy Florrie beast, we won our jumping run at SWAT on Sunday to go Grade 5 🏆🎉 We nearly didn’t make it to the show after Finn was ill in the night, and we definitely weren’t on top form, but we got it together for the final run. Need to set new agility goals for the year now!

Finn perked up too for a trip out and about and enjoyed begging for food, and fortunately he’s feeling ok today if a little wobbly

I’m starting to test some harder skills with Florrie and today was obstacle discrimination just on a verbal cue, taking advantage of an agility tunnel in place while we were setting up for today’s classes.
First attempt was a dodgy tunnel cue from me 🤦‍♀️ but after that she absolutely nailed it on every try

Just when I thought I might’ve tamed the crazy, along comes Florrie to prove that it’s definitely still there 🤪

I could just post the lovely clear runs and beautiful distance she does but that wouldn’t be reality. We’re getting there, we’ve improved so much but like most people we have more E’s than clears.

The broken startline wasn’t great, I mishandled number 2 and then she clearly thought ‘sod this, I’m running!’

But how cool are her weaves 🔥 and the dog walk was great. There are always positives to be had in even the craziest runs. No results for us this weekend, but we did at least finish with a great jumping run with just one pole down. She’s keeping me waiting for that final win!

Well and truly leaving my comfort zone, I’ve entered Florrie into this years Hoopers Team GB tryouts 😬

No idea whether we’re ready or not, but she’s got some amazing skills and I wanted a big goal to work towards, so we’ll give it a go.

We’ve got a couple of months to practice first and we need to work on very static handling from me, long lead outs, larger distances between obstacles and running without a collar as well as no toy in my pocket. It could be a complete car crash but I won’t know unless I try!

Training went on the road earlier this week! I’ve been working with a lovely Daschund who is very alert to her surroundings and has a ‘bark first, think later’ approach to people, dogs, unexpected things.

We’ve been using scent to give her a chance to use her nose and brain and she absolutely loves it and is brilliant. It’s been a great way to start introducing dogs and people and showing her she doesn’t need to worry about them being nearby. As well as this we’ve been working through training techniques to help her when she does get overwhelmed.

It was time to test the training in public earlier this week and she nailed it! We started off with scent in the garden centre car park before entering the shop itself when she was relaxed enough. A full walk through a busy shop with lots of dogs and people and she stayed calm throughout. So proud of her and her owner, she’s coming on brilliantly.

I took the opportunity to train Florrie afterwards and she actually worried a lot about people and noise, more practice needed for us!

How cute was the Fly dog in the first photo 🥹

This one came up in my memories, as it’s around the time of year i adopted her. Who knew the shut down quiet girl who wouldn’t leave her kennel without being carried would turn into an anxious growly bitey mess as soon as I got her home!

She was a huge challenge, she was so anxious but dealt with it by biting things to make them go away. I had to learn a lot very quickly, I still remember challenges like her planting herself on a walk and refusing to walk, and biting me because someone stopped to ask directions.

I worked hard with her, with a lot of support, and while she’s always been quirky she has turned into the best, easiest dog possible. She walks off lead everywhere, can cope in groups of people or dogs as long as no one jumps on her and even does stooge dog work for me now and really enjoys it.

Fly dog is about 16 now and in liver failure but she’s still full of life, just a little greyer and deafer, and she loves her long walks. Hoping I’ve still got a long while left with this girl (although I’m a little worried she’s trying to outlive all the other dogs out of spite so she can have me to herself 😆)

It would be so easy just to post my successes, but that gives an unrealistic impression of our ability, and of the work that goes in to achieve success.

This weekend Florrie had her first major wobble at a show since last September. She was wild and just couldn’t listen. Now that I’ve trained a startline routine I’m really firm on sticking to criteria so when she couldn’t wait twice in her agility run we left the ring without running the course. Typical that it was a course that I really wanted to run.

There is nothing Florrie wants more in life than to do agility so if I’d let her run the course she would have been rewarded for breaking her wait, and that’s a very slippery slope with her. I need her wait to be solid so if she breaks it she will always have one chance to reset, if that doesn’t work we leave the ring. Fortunately this is the first time we’ve had to leave!

The following day was far better, two solid waits and excellent runs, just little mistakes and some training needs to work on.
