* this was posted on a vet group as an example of misinformation by horsehalo. Pretty embarrassing 😳

Spooky Sunday Post!

I was recently reunited with Bean and his mum Rihanna after a 2 year interval. Rihanna is a 3rd year vet student at Nottingham Uni and keeps Bean on campus when she's at uni.

I met him to help with a lameness problem in early 2024 and then he went home for while.

Whilst he was at home, Rihanna had an equine communicator to visit him. Now, think what you will, but Bean asked if he could please "see the horse physio from university again".

Believer or not, it brought a tear to my eye!

It's been a busy week for physiotherapy for me! One horse I treated was Rosie, a gorgeous cob.

Here she is doing the horse version of a burpee 😆

Thanks to El Simpson for letting me post this.

Hi everyone!
I'm away for my wedding anniversary in Rome (Lucky me!) But I cant switch my horse brain off!

Looking at this horse, I can make so many observations. Here are a few of mine..what do you see?

- camped under stance of feet to support back/take weight off heels and load toes
- over the knee stance LF indicating tension through caudal doft tissues such as DDFT, long head triceps, carpal flexors
- nostril wrinkling and ears back indicating discomfort
- unusual triple clip shoe behind
- heel extensions offering lots of caudal support to foot especially on hinds
- effusion/swelling of tarsocrural joint/large hock joint on hindlimb
- high heel, broken forward hoof pastern axis on LH
- underun low heel on FLs
- contracted ventral line and flexed lumbosacral junction/tucked under pelvis

I'd love to give this horse some physio!

Today I was joined by 2 veterinary physiotherapy students with unusual backgrounds. Claire is training at Nottingham University and is currently a wind turbine engineer. Jane is training at UCLAN and used to be a Detective Inspector in the police.

We had a great discussion about transferable skills such as Jane's ability to solve puzzles like why a horse can't perform a particular thing or, in a previous life, a murder! Whilst Claire views horses through her engineer's eyes looking at their movements in relation to physics.

Everyone brings their own unique perspective!

Wishing all my lovely clients are very happy Christmas and new year!

I'm looking forward to working with you all next year to do the best we can for the horses we care for.

Thank you for watching, listening and trusting your gut. Every horse I work with teaches me something new and I promise to keep listening and learning!

Using this app has really helped me to monitor how horses change during each session and to observe objectively accurately, changes over months and years!

New York regulatory veterinarians have been using the Sleip app for 2 ½ years, while Kentucky’s team adopted the technology in March of 2025; California’s regulatory veterinarians added the Sleip app to their arsenal just two weeks ago: https://tinyurl.com/bdzybf5x

Why repeat lameness/movement assessment after treatment?

I always reassess horses straight after I've treated them and often get asked why. I am aware that this is not common practice for MSK therapists and there are some reasons not to do it, but here's why I do:

- not every horse has better symmetry/decreased lameness after treatment
- the horse's response to treatment will guide my next steps

Here's how:

- MSK therapy aims to identify and release muscular tensions, loosen fascia, mobilise joints and areas of the body.

- these tensions may be in place as responses to pain in another area

- removing or reducing them could be detrimental to the horse if there is an underlying primary issue. This is IMPORTANT.

- by reassessing after treatment, I am sometimes able to see which limb is the problem limb. The horse will then do it's best to offload the weight onto other limbs so reforming tensions and hiding the issue.

The muscles tell a story. As a vet, I was not able to read this story but my training as a physiotherapist allows me to try. It's not always easy to unpick the puzzle, but it's not enough to find the sore, tight bits, it's about asking WHY they are there.
