What do pet sitters actually DO when they come to visit your pets, you might be wondering? So, I thought it would be interesting if I tell you what happens on a visit!
Before I do, please let me remind you that if you are going away for a holiday, or are out visiting family and friends the period over Christmas, there are only a few slots left available for Christmas Day and other important days around Christmas and New Year! So if you want to use me for Christmas and/or new year please see my other posts, or my pinned posts, for times and prices!
Anyway, this is what happens on a standard and typical visit for your cat:
1. Always wear my ID lanyard and attach the keys for that house to it so the keys are always with me - accidentally locking yourself out is not going to be something anyone needs to worry about!
2. Arrive and turn off alarm.
3. Pick up any post or parcels and put them on a side or a table.
4. Pop my bags down - I have a bag for admin and paperwork with all your info on it, and one with cleaning supplies in them. Most people leave their own products but I always like to make sure I have plenty of stock of things like disposable cloths for washing up bowls or cleaning after accidents, p**p bags, small bin liners, disinfectant spray, hand sanitiser, and I even carry a long handled dustpan and brush in the car to clean up any litter or food that’s made its way onto the floor!
5. Once the bags are down, I go off and find your kitty! Some cats come straight up to you when you come in and some cats hide. Some cats want you to play with them, some want cuddles and others don’t want to know you! But I always make sure I have at the very least set eyes on them so I can see if they look like they’re in good health.
6. I sit down and give cuddles and playtime and maybe some catnip if they like it.
7. I usually take a couple of photos and then on the first visit and last visit and also some occasions in between, I will send the pics to the owners and let them know that their cats are fine and doing well. I think it’s important to reassure people that you have actually turned up and are actually there, looking after their pets. Because I have to ask people to trust me, someone they may not know!
8. Then I wash and dry food bowls and water bowls and refill them with fresh food and water.
9. I empty anything out of the litter trays, or change the litter if needed.
10. I put all the empty food packages and p**p bag etc into a small bin liner that I bring with me and every few days I pop the whole bin liner in the black bin on the way out. If they smell at all they go straight out.
11. I sit and go through the client info sheet that all my customers fill in to make sure I haven’t missed anything and to check if there are flowers to be watered, or wheelie bins to go out or brought back in. I check to see if my customers want their curtains opened or closed, or lights turned off and on.
12. I fill out a small daily journal of what your cat has done or hasn’t done. This gets left for you to look through when you return. I then go through my own checklist to make sure I’ve done everything and tick them off and make any notes of anything worthy of writing down!
13. I play or cuddle with your cat again before I go and usually leave a few treats and some catnip when it’s time to leave.
14. I check all the doors are closed as they should be and reset any alarms and leave the house, locking up, and putting any rubbish in the black bin on the way out. Back in the car and onto the next job or if I’m really lucky - home time!
15. I do not time standard visits unless you are paying extra for an hour visit. Each standard visit is completely down to the cat and their needs. I fit in all of the above and then leave, no matter the time it takes. Some cats like to play more than others and others will hide upstairs under the bed until you leave. So it could be 15 minutes that I am there for, if the cat is shy or hiding, or just gets fed up of my cuddles, or it could be 30 minutes if your cat is enjoying playing and cuddling. Christmas Day and bank holidays are usually set at 15 minutes max, just so I can accommodate everyone as not many pet sitters actually work on Christmas or bank holidays. But I will always make sure I follow every step I listed above with ALL cats!
Pic of one of my lovely clients lovely boy! He loves cuddles, is super friendly, and loves my supply bag because he got into it and the cat nip bag inside it and ripped it open (this is a regular occurrence 😂), and so my entire work bag smells of catnip! He likes to just roll around on it while I go about my business! He gets away with it because as all cats are, he’s just a little baby! 😻
