Microchips make it possible to reunite lost pets with their owners. Tags and collars can break or get lost - which is why it’s so important to get your pet microchipped! But how do these devices work?

🔬 A pet microchip is a tiny tag, about as big as a grain of rice, that stores an ID number. They don’t have a battery or source of power - just a chip, an antenna, and a capacitor which allows an external device to power the chip when read.

📡 A vet can use an interrogator device to give the chip energy, which the chip uses to emit its unique ID number. This number can be used to look up your pet in a lost pets database - and reunite them with you!

📝 Your contact details will be stored in this database - not on the chip! This means that updating your details does not require you to go to the vet, or replace the chip. The chip will always remain safely under your pet’s skin.

⚠️ Register your pet in a government-approved database, and ensure that your details are always up-to-date. Outdated details will make it harder to contact you in the event your pet gets lost!

Is your pet not microchipped yet? Book your appointment with The Brook today!

Why should you microchip your pet?

Here at The Brook Veterinary Surgery, we want to ensure the safety and well-being of your beloved pets. We always suggest that our clients microchip their pets.

Here’s why:

✅ It will allow your pet to be returned to you, should they become lost or stolen

✅ Tags and collars can break off, but a microchip is safely under your pet’s skin

✅ There are pet devices that can be programmed to respond to your pet’s specific microchip, opening up a myriad of technological opportunities

✅ Microchipping is a legal requirement in the UK for dogs and cats

Thinking about a career as a veterinary nurse, or know a young person who is?

Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month is a great time to explore the role. Training usually involves an approved college or university course plus placements in practice, leading to registration with the RCVS as a professional veterinary nurse.

Our nurses are always happy to chat briefly about their training pathway and what they enjoy most about the job when time allows between patients.

You can also find excellent careers information on the BVNA and The College of Animal Welfare websites if you’d like to learn more.

Many people still think veterinary nurses just ‘hold pets’, but the reality is so much more.

Behind the scenes, our nurses are: monitoring anaesthetics, placing intravenous catheters, taking blood samples, running lab tests, taking X‑rays, providing in‑patient care, running nurse clinics, and supporting the vets with complex procedures.

They also play a big role in preventative healthcare; from vaccinations and parasite advice to dental care and weight clinic, helping keep pets healthier for longer.

VNAM exists to raise awareness of this skilled, vital role in veterinary practice.

Drop a 🐾 below if you’ve learned something new about what vet nurses do.

🐾💚 As pets get older, little changes can make a big difference to their quality of life.

Our nurses offer senior health clinics for dogs and cats, looking at mobility, weight, dental health, toileting changes, sleeping patterns and any new lumps or bumps you’ve noticed.

These appointments give you time to talk through your concerns with someone who understands what it’s like to care for an ageing pet – from slippery floors and night‑time restlessness to worries about pain.

If your dog or cat is starting to show their age, ask about booking a senior nurse clinic next time you call. 💚🐾

Poison Guide & Symptom Checker

Worried about your pet? Our free online resources from Vet Help Direct can provide immediate guidance when you need it most.

Poison Guide
Pets are naturally curious, and sometimes that curiosity leads them to things they shouldn’t eat or touch. Our comprehensive poison guide helps you quickly identify whether something your pet has encountered could be harmful. From chocolate and grapes to household plants and cleaning products, you’ll find clear information about common toxins, what symptoms to watch for, and what to do next.
If your pet has ingested something potentially poisonous, time matters. Use the poison guide to assess the situation, then contact us immediately for professional advice. We’re here to help, and early intervention can make all the difference.

Symptom Checker
Not sure if your pet’s symptoms need veterinary attention? Our interactive symptom checker helps you understand what might be going on and whether your companion needs to be seen urgently or if the issue can wait. Simply answer a few questions about what you’re observing, and the tool will provide guidance tailored to your pet’s specific symptoms.

While the symptom checker is a valuable resource, it’s not a substitute for professional veterinary advice. If you’re concerned about your pet’s health, we always encourage you to call us. We’d rather reassure you than have you worry at home.

Access These Free Tools
Visit our website to access the Vet Help Direct poison guide and symptom checker anytime, day or night. These resources provide peace of mind when you need quick answers, helping you make informed decisions about your pet’s care.

This gorgeous young man has been with us for about a week now and was brought in as a stray. He is around 4 years old, entire and very affectionate. He is microchipped but unfortunately the contact details are not up to date. We have contacted other local practice’s and unfortunately he is not registered with them. If he is yours, please get in contact (proof of ownership will be required) otherwise we will hold on to him for a little while longer, before he goes off to a new home.
