Follow up video to yesterdays with the pup taking the stairs much slower and safer for the handler, which is what we needed him to do. Plus to help him learn to slow it down and not get over excited by jumping ahead and guessing rather than watching and /or listening.
This was all done over 1 session as dog got the idea very quickly so i was able to move him on quicker too.

Some amazing training with this pup to help when using stairs with owner. We found that he wud try racing ahead so here we are teaching him to pause when owner pauses and popping to a cue as well incase need for anything else too later on.

Stair vid to follow.

I constantly forget to film the progress hen training these new tasks, but this is our latest one, being able to bring up a basket full of things that need taking upstairs. This was difficult for 2 reasons, firstly i had to find a basket where handle went long ways across to make it easier for dog to hold, and secondly anything like drinks or objects that rolls around can throw the balance off for dog. PLUS the dog has to learn to lift their head, yep even echo, my giraffe hybrid had to learn to lift her head up. The first few goes she spooked herself because the base of basket hit the step in front, so she learnt by herself she needed to lift her head.
In the video your see when she picks up basket she circles and resets herself as shes not yet confident enough to know she can just bring her head up straight off, she turns away and repositions before coming up and handing basket to me.

Be aware usually she walks up at same time carrying but for purpose of the video ive made her wait before coming.

So i noticed this year flossie wasnt getting into the bigger paddling pool, usually she goes in does her best hippo impression and creates tidal waves, She has to use steps to get into the car, on the sofa and bed now so i thought i wonder if shes struggling with her arthritis to jump in. Well this is 10 mins of after popping out the spare exercise step used for training. It made my heart melt to see her so happy to be back in her bigger pool. (I also now have 2 very soggy dogs)

As you can see i had set up the smaller plastic pool for her but noticed she wasnt standing in it completely and kept looking at the bigger pool of water. Just goes to show as our beloved dogs get older they may need that extra help to do their favourite thing again. Also how handy it is having the spare exercise steps i used to use when they were smaller and now back in use now their older.

Prepping the next 2 days of ice lollys. 1 nice simple of hot dogs and kibble, using slight bit of the hot dog brine to flavour the water (around 50 mls top rest of jug with water as dogs taste buds r so much better than ours)
Then the 2nd one has rabbit liver at bottom and then flossies has dried chicken sticks and pumpkin powder topped with water and then echo has the rabbit liver but has circles of dried beef as she has goats milk powder topped with water, milk powder gives floss an upset belly so i made sure i cud tell difference by shape of treats ontop.

Ive included a picture of the powders used incase anyone was interested. Ive also ordered some melon to freeze for them in sticks to have next week to as i find it creates a nice slush for them as they chew, really good for teething pups as chills n numbs their gums as eat.

***As always make sure anything you put in these ice blocks are dog friendly and always check if unsure or just dont use***

Reminder to get some frozen lollys done for those pooches to help keep them cool over the next week. Go nice and simple with kibble and water or if your dogs a fan of fruit you could even make some ice cubes with fruit in for them.

I like to get bit adventourous with my guys so tomorrow they have the broken bits of chews (beef skin, gullet, muscle, jerky ect) placed in an old take away container with some sprinkled pumpkin powder and then ive just added water. I try keep it different for my guys but no one says you have to.

Be aware that, i no my choc lab chews at the plastic pots to get hers out so until i can get paper party cups i will remove from plastic pots before giving so please know your dog and remove if doing in plastic pots too, just to keep them safe.

If your dog likes a carrot why not stick a whole carrot in to freeze and then allow them to eat it frozen? Will take them longer and keep them cool!

Whats your go to?

WARM WEATHER
Please look out for messages from me the day before your sessions next week as anything over 20 (22 degrees if inside) i will be cancelling sessions because its just far to hot for any of the dogs after this as it is expected to reach up to 30 degrees and the safety of your dogs is my priority. This will be decided the day before your sessions in the evening and a message will be sent. Any sessions already paid for or in a block will simply be rolled over for you.

Please do be aware that just because you have an assistance dog (or one in training), their welfare and safety comes before the need to go out, and is why its always a good idea to have a back up plan such as a friend or family member to come with you so your dog remains safely at home. It does not harm them to miss a walk or outing, but taking them out in the heat can make them seriously unwell. Be aware young dogs and elderly are of higher risk.

This is echos run, you see at the beginning ive left her in a stay and working out the best place for me to cue from as well as which cues to use and when. Echo loves to run at speed in a circle, so calling her in and flicking out goes against everything she wants to do, so i have to get my cues in early for her to have enough time to break and change direction, but she does absolutely love classes so i will always make sure ive left an afternoon/morning free for both dogs as 1 thing i hated b4 i worked for myself, was my own dogs not getting what i wanted them to do, now its pencilled in calender as there time and im unwilling to compromise that.

As a side note yes assistance dogs can have fun and time off for other fun things like sport too.

Had so much fun when i took echos friennd, annie to our hoopers training this week. Annie has never done hoopers but she is a grade 6 to 7 in agility and the cues for hoopers is exactly the same, its just a lower impact sport. Whilst it was fun running her, my brain defo cant think as fast as she runs so i had to work out where my cues were gunna go before releasing her. Actually felt when i ran echos after she felt slow lol, her video will follow tomorrow.

I will say i find swapping dogs to train sometimes actually helps you realise how much/ far your own dog is, or where your aiming to be, and although annies fast i new i cud do some harder cues for echo n had a few ways i could approach the course.
