Celebrating our Members - shining the spotlight on our Cyprus Resue Volunteers and Members

Today a massive thank you to Samantha Wayland Dog Training who was absolutely incredible working and supporting the rescue dogs. Kindness, understanding and empathy that goes above and beyond. She also was one of our speakers discussing rescue dogs which was such a fantastic talk.

We were so lucky to have her with us!

A huge thank you to Positive Dog Trainers Academy PDTA for this opportunity.

Thank you Sam:

Hi! I'm Sam and I run Samantha Wayland Dog Training and am a co founder of Rescue Dog Care Network.

I joined PPN just over 2 years ago and I have to say it totally changed the trajectory of my career. When I joined I was a dog walker who wanted to learn and do more and I just didn't know where to start!

I felt very alone and overwhelmed in the dog world which as we all know can be a negative place at times. I will be forever grateful for this positive and supportive space.

In late 2023 I saw a post about a rescue trip to Cyprus and a I had been a fosterer of overseas rescues for years I thought this would be a great experience! In march 2024 I set off to the airport to meet a bunch of people I didn't know and we headed off to work in the shelters.

This lead to connections and friends for life both with the UK trainer's and with some of the Cyprus trainers too! I headed back again this year and I do nothing but tell people how great the experience is!

If you want to know more about rescue dogs/shelter dogs/overseas rescues there is nothing better than hands on experience! You also get to hear some amazing speakers each day if I do say so myself lol ( I heard a workshop on overseas dogs was particularly good đŸ‘€đŸ€Ł).

I have so much to thank PPN for, my career is on the path I've always dreamed of, I have friends and colleagues that I speak to every single day, I have the most amazing support network 💚 thank you Helen for creating this safe space and I can't wait to see what 2026 brings!

đŸŸđŸŸđŸŸ

The Cyprus Rescue Event takes place every year and is a unique opportunity to help rescues, the staff and volunteers over there and heighten our skillset and knowledge.

PPN is a great community in offering in person experiences like this and a unique educational platform. We'll be opening up membership again officially next week!

So what is everyone doing this weekend with their dogs??

Because we knew we were going to be busy as a family yesterday, the dogs had a great time at a local enclosed field which included a sniffy breakfast!

Who says breakfast has to come from a bowl? One of the easiest ways to give your dog a bit of extra joy (and a brain workout) is to scatter their breakfast in the grass and let them sniff it out.

Using their nose like this isn’t just fun—it’s super calming and great for their confidence, especially for nervous or rescue dogs. Sniffing taps into their natural instincts, helps lower stress, and keeps their brain busy in all the best ways.

So go on—ditch the bowl, grab a handful of food, and let your dog enjoy a slow, sniffy start to the day.

You’ll be amazed at what a difference it makes!

Separation Anxiety in Dogs – You're Not Alone!

Is your dog struggling when left alone?

Separation anxiety is more common than you might think, and it can be incredibly distressing for both dogs and their humans.

Some signs of separation anxiety include-
- Barking or howling when left alone
- Pacing or restlessness
- Refusing to eat when you're not there
- Scratching at doors or windows
- Destructive behaviour like ripping furniture or chewing walls

These behaviours aren’t your dog being “naughty” – they’re signs of genuine distress. The good news is, support is available.

We offer a dedicated Separation Anxiety Programme designed to help your dog feel safe and secure when alone. It’s a gentle, gradual approach tailored to each individual dog, focused on rebuilding confidence and creating calm, independent moments.

Whether your dog is newly adopted or has been struggling for a while, we’re here to guide you both through it.

Contact us on 07494 391131 or DM us to chat about how we can help your dog feel better about being home alone.

Why does my rescue dog need a safe space?

“They can sleep on the sofa like my old dog did, right??"

I totally get it—your old dog might’ve loved curling up on the sofa, and your new rescue might get there too
but let’s remember: all dogs are individuals.

For many overseas rescues, the inside of a home is a brand new (and possibly scary) world. Everything from TVs, stairs, mirrors, and even the smell of cleaning products can be overwhelming. That’s why having a designated safe space - whether it’s a crate, a penned-off area, or a cosy bed in a quiet corner - is so important.

It gives them somewhere to retreat when they’re feeling unsure, a place to decompress and just breathe. It’s also a spot they can eat and sleep undisturbed, which helps reduce the risk of things like resource guarding later on.

It’s not about limiting our new arrivals - it’s about setting them up for success.

Let’s give our rescues the best possible start in their new life.

A little safe space can make a big difference.

I know the feeling..

You’ve just brought your new rescue dog home and you want to give them EVERYTHING!

The snuggly bed that matches your sofa? Bought it.
Squeaky toys in every shape and colour? Absolutely.
A spa day with bubbles and paw balm? Booked.

But here’s the truth

The BEST thing you can give your new rescue dog isn’t in your Amazon basket..

It’s time and patience.

These dogs have been through a lot. New smells, new people, new routines—it’s a lot to take in.

So while you’re tempted to shower them in gifts (and I get it, i really do)

The greatest gift you can offer is the space to just be.

To decompress. To observe. To feel safe.

Let them settle. Let them come to you in their own time.

Your quiet presence means more to them than any squeaky chicken ever could.

And don’t worry—the bubble baths can come later.

I’m based in Essex and also work remotely supporting adopters and fosterers with nervous or overseas rescues. Everything here—and more—is covered in detail in my rescue dog programmes

This is the very handsome George, you can see in this short video that he is limping and as such Rights For Animals Cyprus have taken him to the vets. His issues need further examination and that isn't going to be cheap!

If anyone can spare even a couple of pounds or the price of a cup of coffee that would all add up!

You love rescue dogs.
But this bit?
This bit is hard.

You’ve opened your heart and home more times than most.
You’ve fostered, you’ve adopted, you’ve said yes even when it felt like chaos.

But now?
You’ve got two dogs who don’t quite get along.

A new rescue who’s trying to settle.
And you’re stuck in the middle, Googling, guessing, and feeling like you’re letting them all down.

YOU'RE NOT!
You just need a hand. And that’s where I come in.

I help people like you — heart-led, overwhelmed, and doing their best — bring calm to their rescue crew.

Because you đ—–đ—źđ—» have peace in your home again.
You đ—–đ—źđ—» enjoy lunch with friends without guilt.
You đ—–đ—źđ—» get your kids involved in the process.

Want to chat about how it could look in your home?

DM me “CALM” and I’ll send over the next step.

Why Is My Rescue Dog Freezing on Walks?

If your overseas rescue suddenly stops mid-walk and refuses to move, don’t worry — they’re not being stubborn or trying to test you!

Many dogs from places like Cyprus or Romania have grown up in very different environments. Our world — with its noisy roads, strange smells, and fast-moving bikes — can be totally overwhelming. Sometimes they freeze because they’re scared. Other times, they’re simply trying to process all the new sights and sounds around them.

It’s not about disobedience or being Stubborn. It’s about fear, uncertainty, or just taking a moment to figure things out.

Be patient, offer reassurance, and let them go at their pace.

Confidence comes with time and trust 💚
