Absolutely Fabulous’ Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley are reunited for a sitcom this Christmas — and this one is set to be a good one!
The BBC has released a first look at the Amandaland Christmas special, giving fans a glimpse of the pair’s first scripted on-screen reunion since they played the iconic Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone in Ab Fab. First announced back in October, it was later confirmed that Saunders would be joining the cast as a guest star.
The festive episode, part of the Motherland spin-off, sees Saunders step into the role of Aunt Joan — sister to Lumley’s Felicity. Aunt Joan is described as “a ball of country-living, enthusiastic upper-class bluster – very, very different from Felicity”, which already sounds like perfect comedy territory for the two of them.
In the newly released image, Lumley and Saunders sit either side of Lucy Punch (Amanda), with Philippa Dunne, Samuel Anderson, Alexander Shaw and Miley Locke standing behind. The scene appears to be Christmas Day, complete with cracker hats, pavlova, mince pies, a cheese board and plenty of festive chaos on the table.
Saunders said she is “delighted” to join the Amandaland gang: “Playing Joanna’s on-screen sister is guaranteed to be a laugh.” Lucy Punch added that the special will be “an absolute cracker”.
Writers Holly Walsh and Laurence Rickard said Saunders is “the perfect addition to the gang”.
Amandaland will air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer, with the Christmas special’s broadcast date to be confirmed soon.
