🌡️ Keep Rabbits and Guinea Pigs Safe in the Heat 🐰🐹

We’re extremely concerned about outdoor pets this week as the temperatures are set to rise again. Every summer, rabbits and guinea pigs tragically die from heatstroke because they’re kept in hutches that become dangerously hot—essentially ovens in the sun.

No rabbit should be living in a standard hutch permanently, but regardless of your setup, it’s absolutely vital to take action in hot weather. Heatstroke can kill quickly, and small pets are especially vulnerable.

👉 Here’s what you can do to keep them cool and safe:

✅ Best option: Bring them indoors
Move them into a cool room indoors, ideally with curtains closed to block sunlight.

Provide fans if possible.

Place frozen water bottles or ice packs wrapped in a towel in their space for them to lie against.

💧 Hydration is essential
Always provide multiple bowls of water—not just bottles. Bowls are easier to drink from when they’re hot and dehydrated.

Add ice cubes to their water to help keep it cooler for longer.

🌿 Shade and ventilation
If bringing them indoors isn’t possible, make sure their enclosure is fully shaded all day.

Hang white sheets or reflective materials over hutches/runs to deflect heat.

Ensure plenty of airflow—avoid covering every side if there's no ventilation.

Move them to a cooler, shaded part of the garden if necessary.

❄️ Extra cooling ideas
Use ceramic tiles or slates from the freezer for them to lie on.

Offer cool, damp vegetables (e.g. cucumber, celery) in moderation for added hydration.

⚠️ Warning signs of heatstroke:

Lethargy

Panting or rapid breathing

Red ears

Drooling

Unresponsiveness

If you see these signs, move them to a cooler area immediately and contact a vet urgently.

💬 Please don’t wait until it’s too late. Make a plan now to keep your animals safe. A few simple steps could save their lives.

A new aquatic, reptile and exotic animal super store opening in Stafford at the former ‘Fish World’ site on the 23rd November 2018. We will be adding more tropical and cold water tanks, more vivariums and a small animal section selling everything from birds to Degus, Hedgehogs to spiders!
