Last week, Swift gave us all quite a scare when he became very poorly. 💔
Swift had Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis. He became very poorly in a very short space of time, and despite having intensive care with our fabulous vets, there was still no improvement. 😔
Our final option was to give Swift a blood transfusion. We are so grateful to those who donate blood to save our little furries. Without that special canine out there, we would have lost Swift. 💔
🐶 Symptoms to Watch For
* Sudden onset of severe diarrhoea, often with large amounts of bright red blood
* Vomiting
* Lethargy or weakness
* Loss of appetite
* Abdominal pain or discomfort
* Dehydration (dry gums, sunken eyes, excessive panting)
* Collapse in severe cases
🚨 What to Do
* Contact your vet immediately – don’t wait to see if it improves.
* Do not give human medication unless your vet tells you to.
* Offer small amounts of fresh water if your dog can keep it down, but don’t force them to drink.
* If possible, take a fresh stool sample with you to the vet.
* Be prepared for your dog to need hospital treatment, including intravenous fluids, anti-sickness medication, pain relief, and close monitoring.
❤️ Remember
HGE can look alarming because of the amount of blood, but with prompt veterinary care, many dogs recover well. Delaying treatment can lead to severe dehydration and shock.
If your dog has sudden bloody diarrhoea or is becoming weak, treat it as an emergency and seek veterinary attention straight away. 🚑
